The Average Garage Price

Garage Doors

If the homeowner only wants to replace the garage door to give the garage section of the house a new look, prices typically fall between $400 and $700 for aluminum framework versions as of 2010. Stained wood or paneled garage doors tend to cost more, between $800 and $2000 depending on the quality and designed of the wood. Installation can add as much as $750 to the overall cost.

Garage Door Openers

Not all garage units include garage door openers. These are often sold separately, and if they break they must be replaced separately from the garage door motor. The average garage door opener costs between $130 and $300 dollars. Garage remotes are typically around $20 per unit.

Contractor Work

If a contractor is building the garage, a good rule of thumb for cost is about $40 per square foot. For the smallest garages that only have enough room for one vehicle, this works out to about $8000 to $10,000. Two car garages tend to be about 380 square feet, which works out between $13,000 and $17,000. A larger double car garage with room for a workbench and storage space can cost significantly more, and can reach up to $30,000 or $35,000 with added space, materials and insulation.

Without Contractors

If the homeowner builds the garage themselves, prices fall considerably. The most simple single car garage can cost around $3000 to $5000 with the right materials. Kits to build these garages fall between $5000 and $14,000 and more for higher quality materials.

Landscaping Work

Building a garage often requires landscaping work of some sort. A concrete driveway, for instance, can cost several thousand dollars if it needs to be installed along with the garage. Flower beds and walkways leading around the garage can also cost several hundred dollars or more. The garage must also be painted and periodically washed, which can cost several hundred additional dollars every several years.
