The Best Diet for Hypoglycemia



Complex Carbohydrates and Proteins

Complex carbohydrates are recommended as part of a hypoglycemic diet. They take longer to break down in the intestines and can keep blood sugar levels stable. Examples of complex carbohydrates are potatoes, grains and pasta. Proteins also are very effective in staving off hypoglycemia, as they also break down in the body at a slow pace, contributing to a regulated, stable system. Cheese, meats and even peanut butter are good choices of proteins.

Fiber

Fiber-rich foods are effective in battling hypoglycemia, as they delay the stomach emptying, digestion and the absorption of glucose. Having a fiber snack such as a piece of whole wheat toast or fiber-rich fresh fruit can slow sugar absorption substantially. Fiber also can be found in a variety of vegetables.

Frequency of Meals

It is critical that those with hypoglycemia have regular meals and also snack between meals to further stability. Some hypoglycemics find it effective to have five or six smaller meals throughout the day. At each meal a fiber and protein should be included. For example, a slice of cheese on a whole wheat cracker would be a good option. Caffeine, alcohol and food high in fat should be excluded from a hypoglycemic diet, as they all can exacerbate symptoms.
