Step
1. Tap 'Menu' on your G1 phone and then tap 'Settings.' Next tap 'Application Settings' and then tap the check box next to 'Unknown sources.' This option must be selected in order to allow non-Market applications.
2. Open a Web browser on your computer. Visit the Google Project Hosting page to access the 'flashrec-20090815.apk' file. Click the name of the file and then navigate to a location to save the file on your computer such as 'Desktop.'
3. Insert the USB cable into your G1 and then plug the other end of the cable into your phone. The prompt on your G1 screen asks for permission to access the phone. Click 'Turn on USB storage' to load the G1 memory as an external drive.
4. Click on the 'flashrec-20090815.apk' icon on your computer and drag it to the external drive that represents your G1 phone. The file is placed on the G1's SD card or any folder within it that you select.
5. Tap 'Turn off USB Storage' on your G1 screen. Next, navigate to the location of your 'flashrec-20090815.apk' file. Tap the application and follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation.
6. Tap the 'Application Draw' and then swipe until you see the 'Recovery Flasher' app. Tap 'Recovery Flasher' to start the program. Next, tap 'Backup Recovery Image,' which creates a backup of your current configuration.
7. Tap 'Backup to Flash Cynanogen Recovery 1.4' and the application loads a new recovery system onto your G1. This recovery system is an early developer tool that allows a workaround to access the system root. A message reads 'Flashed new recovery image' when the program completes.
8. Hold down the 'Power' button to turn of the phone. Wait ten seconds and then put your finger on the 'Home' button and then press 'Power' to turn the phone back on. This boots the phone in 'Recovery Mode' with root access to the system.
