How to Make an Indian Sand Painting

1. Pour enough sand in each aluminum pie pan to cover the bottom. Create a different colored sand in each pan by pouring powdered tempura paint into the sand and mixing them together with a paintbrush. For darker and brighter colors, use more tempera paint.

2. Draw a design on a piece of construction paper. If you wish, sketch a drawing with a Native American theme, such as a warrior, animal or dream catcher. The Navajos used circles, which were common symbols in sand paintings, to represent eternity and completeness.

3. Pick up a small amount of glue on the tip of the paintbrush. Paint the glue on one part of the drawing, then pour your chosen color of sand over the glue. For example, apply glue with the paintbrush to all the sketch lines you want to color yellow. Pour the yellow-colored paint over the glue lines. Shake the paper to spread the sand evenly.

4. Allow the sand to dry for a few minutes, then shake the excess sand back into its respective pie pan. Repeat until the entire drawing is complete.

5. Seal the sand painting by spraying it with a layer of hairspray. This will keep the sand from falling off the paper or the colors from fading.
