How to Root My LG Optimus Droid

1. Download the SuperOneClick tool onto your Windows computer to root your Optimus. SuperOneClick also requires having the Android Debugging Bridge, or ADB, set up on your computer. The ADB is a part of the SDK development package, and the Android Development site has instructions for how to set it up. Plug your phone into the USB dongle and enable the USB debugging option from the settings on your phone. On your computer, run the SuperOneClick.exe file and click the 'Root' tab and the 'Root' button. Allow it to root your phone.

2. Install the Z4Root application on your Optimus phone. Z4Root is no longer available in the Android Market, but you can download it onto your computer and transfer it to your phone over the USB dongle. Change your phone settings to allow you to install applications from non-Market sources. Mount the SD card from the Optimus on your computer and double-click it to open it. Download the Z4Root application and decompress it on your computer. Copy the APK file from your computer to your Optimus SD card. Close the file browser and right-click the SD card. Choose to unmount it or safely remove it. Unplug the USB dongle. Navigate to your SD card with your favorite file manager on your Optimus and tap the Z4Root file to install it. Run it from your Applications menu and tap the 'Root' button.

3. Run the Gingerbreak application on your Optimus to root it. GingerBreak takes advantage of a flaw in the Gingerbread version of the stock ROM, but some have had success rooting Froyo and Honeycomb devices as well. Mount your Optimus on your computer and double-click the SD card to open it in a file browser. Download GingerBreak on your computer and copy it onto the SD card. Close the file browser and right-click the SD card to unmount it or choose the Safely Remove Drive option. Enable the settings on your Optimus to allow you to install non-Market applications, navigate to the SD card using a file manager and tap the APK file to install it. Run GingerBreak from your Applications menu.
