How to Replace an Oil Pump on a VW

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and let the engine cool for 30 minutes. Raise the vehicle according to model-specific suggestions, using only factory recommended jacking points. Support the vehicle with jack stands.

2. Remove the plug from the oil pan and drain the engine oil into the drain pan. Remove the bolts from the oil pan and set the pan aside. Discard the gasket.

3. Remove the protective baffle plate and the suction pipe to access the oil pump. Remove the sprocket bolt and the oil pump.

4. Install the new oil pump. Use the torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 11 foot-pounds. Tighten the sprocket bolt to 18 foot-pounds and the suction pipe to 11 foot-pounds.

5. Install the oil pan and a new gasket and use the torque wrench to tighten to the recommended level. Each Volkswagen engine has a different requirement, so check with your dealer or repair manual for the correct torque for your oil pan bolts.

6. Replace the oil filter (optional) and lower the vehicle. If the oil you drained from the pan was recently changed, check it for contaminants and replace. If the oil is contaminated or dirty, replace it with new oil.
