Can You Put e

Purchased Books

Several e-book markets exist that allow you to purchase books that you can read on both your computer and Android device. The Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Nobel Nook eBook readers also have computer and Android applications. Google Books allows you to read online or through the use of a mobile app. Visit the site of the e-book vendor to purchase books. Search the Android Market for the appropriate application. The mobile apps have you sign in to your account with the e-book vendor so everything can by synced from your computer to your Android device.

Public Domain Books

All of the e-book markets have free books available. Often these books are works that have expired copyrights so the titles have entered the public domain. This means that you can freely download and read the books. One of the major purveyors of public domain titles is Project Gutenberg -- named for the inventor of the printing press. Gutenberg titles can be read online using your Android browser at Gutenberg.org or by logging in to the Gutenberg.org site through an Android app, including the FBReader, which can browse the Gutenberg.org catalog.

Adobe Digital Editions

Far and away the most popular eBook format is the ePub format created by Adobe. Through the ePub format electronic books can be sold, lent and transferred while still protecting the copyright interests of the author and publisher. Open ePub works can be saved to the Android device's SD card in the 'eBooks/import' folder. The free eBook apps OverDrive and Aldiko can read ePub works in that folder. You can download the apps from the Android Market. Some ePub books will require you to authorize a device with an Adobe identification. You can create your Adobe ID at Adobe.com and use it to log in to your mobile app such as OverDrive.

Library Lending

Public libraries are stocking and lending e-books. If your library participates you can read lent eBooks on both your computer and Android device. The OverDrive Media Console -- available at OverDdrive.com -- can download lent books and transfer them to your Android device. You need to have the OverDrive reader on your Android as well as the Media Console on your computer. The lent books will expire at the end of the lending period and be automatically deleted from your computer and your Android. In the same way that physical books are limited, libraries can only lend a certain number of eBooks at a time, so you might have to wait before borrowing a best seller to read on your Android tablet.

How to Write a Shell Script to Delete Files

1. Open your command line interface and start a text editor. The most common one is Vi, but if you have a favorite, such as Emacs or Nano, feel free to use that instead. Name your script something descriptive, such as 'delete_script.'

2. Type your first line: '#!/bin/bash', as you will be using bash to interpret the script. For your second line, write a comment that tells you what the script does. For this script, use the comment '#Removes files.' The '#' at the beginning of the line tells the interpreter that this is a comment.

3. Write the line to delete your files. Since you are using this script to delete any files or folders, it's best to use the command 'rm -ri'. The '-r' argument will delete all files if you pass a folder to the script and the '-i' will ask you to confirm that you want to delete your files. Instead of putting a specific filename in your script, use '$*', which will substitute the file you pass to it when you run the script. The whole script line should be 'rm -ri $*'.

4. Add one more line that confirms the deletion of files: 'echo 'Deleting files $*' '. The '$*' argument echos anything passed to the script from the command line. Save your file and exit the text editor.

5. Create permissions on your script so you can run it. Type 'chmod 755 your_script'. Make sure that the folder your script is located in is in your path. If it's not, you can browse to the folder it's in to run it.

6. Run the script to test it. Create a test file, preferably in the same folder as the script, then run the following command: './delete_script testfile'. If you used the '-i' argument, the command line will ask you to confirm the deletion of the file. If you also added the last line 'Deleting files,' you should see this after the confirmation before your command line returns to the shell prompt. You can use 'ls' to check that your file has been deleted.

Can I Root a Flashed Android Phone?

Flashing

Flashing an Android smartphone involves reprogramming its internal software so that it's compatible with a different cellular service provider. Complete the process by connecting your smartphone to a computer and using a program specific to the device to change the settings associated with its carrier. This process is done to allow you to use an Android smartphone that appeals to you, on the service provider of your choice, that isn't natively compatible.

Rooting

Rooting an Android device is the process of gaining administrative privileges for the smartphone. These administrative privileges allow you to alter all aspects of the device, including the CPU speed and operating system, which are typically off limits. While flashing a smartphone to a different carrier alters some of the device's settings, it doesn't change its basic functionality. Therefore, rooting the device is done in the same manner as if the phone were in its original state.

Other Meanings

In addition to changing a smartphone's compatible carriers, flashing an Android device can also refer to installing other custom software, such as a new operating system. This type of flashing typically goes hand-in-hand with root access to the device and completely replaces the Android operating system that's native to the smartphone by installing a custom ROM that was created by a third-party.

Additional Information

According to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 2010, flashing and rooting of cellphones is completely legal. Refer to the official documentation provided by your Android smartphone's manufacturer, as flashing or rooting your device may void any warranties. If the rooting process isn't done correctly, your smartphone can be permanently damaged beyond repair. Consult a professional, if possible, for the best results when altering your device's software.

Android Market is Not Working on My Rooted Nook

Stock Nook

The stock operating system installation on the Nook comes with an application store similar to Google's Android Market. However, the Barnes & Noble application market does not have as many apps as Google's store. Also, you cannot install APK files on the Nook to bypass the restrictions on application availability in the application store provided by Barnes & Noble. While many common applications are available through the stock store, you may want access to alternative options and lesser-known apps.

Root Methods

The Nook rooting methods are installed through the SD card on the device. Since none of the system files are altered on the Nook's internal memory, recovering from any problems while rooting is a fairly simple process. Root images, Auto-Nooter and Manual-Nooter are a few of the root methods used for the Nook. Attempting to access the market after installing the root will either produce errors or not allow the application to launch at all.

Adding Market Support

The method used to add Market support to a rooted Nook depends on the operating system added to the device. If the stock operating system is rooted but not updated, use the YouTube account loophole to access the Android Market using the Gmail account associated with the device and YouTube. Another method involves using the googleservices APK file or a specialty Market installer, such as HoneyGApps. The Android software development kit is required for methods involving the APK files directly.

Alternatives

You can use third-party market applications in place of the Android Market if difficulties arise during the registration and installation process. These application markets are accessible from the Nook's Web browser, and some offer marketplace applications of their own. The application availability and selection may differ from the official market, although many major and popular applications are found across many marketplaces.

Not all apps cache data, and the cache is often recreated when the application runs, but the recreated cache is usually smaller than the saved cache.

3. Move applications to the microSD card. Open “Settings,” tap “Applications,” then touch “Manage Applications.” Tap an application. Touch “Move to SD Card” to remove the app from the phone’s memory and run it from the microSD card.

How to Care for a Nook Color

1. Clean the NOOK Color's touchscreen when you notice fingerprints, smudges or dirt accumulating on it. Moisten a micro-fiber cloth with water and gently wipe the screen. Rub the screen with a dry cloth after you remove all smudges and dust.

2. Keep the NOOK Color away from water sources, such as a pool or bathtub. The NOOK Color may malfunction if dropped in water. If the NOOK Color or its cable gets wet, do not use the device until it dries completely.

3. Use the included cable to recharge the NOOK Color's battery when it gets low. You can normally use the NOOK Color for up to eight hours if you turn off Wi-Fi. When the battery is low, it takes about three hours to fully charge it. If the battery does not hold a charge, contact Barnes & Noble Customer Service for a replacement.

4. Use the NOOK Color only in acceptable temperature ranges. The NOOK Color operates best between 32 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Store the device in temperatures between 5 and 113 degrees Fahrenheit. Charge the NOOK Color in the 41 to 95 degree Fahrenheit range.

5. Buy a cover for your NOOK Color to protect it from damage or screen scratches. Not all Barnes & Noble covers are waterproof, but they can shield the device from some spills. Some covers may be waterproof. Barnes & Noble sells covers at retail stores and online.

Three

Three-Day Diet Pros

The three-day diet is a structured eating plan that promised substantial (up to 10 lbs.) of weight loss in just three days' time. This is accomplished through heavy caloric restriction, as can be seen from a sample breakfast from the plan, consisting of only black coffee, grapefruit, one slice of toast and 1 tbsp. of peanut butter. Regardless of what you think of the menu items on the plan, the diet will almost certainly result in weight loss due to the heavy caloric restriction involved. Therefore, one of the major pros of the three-day diet is that it will work. While it is impossible to say whether you will lose up to the promised 10 lbs., you will certainly lose some weight while on the plan, making it a useful diet for individuals looking to shed some weight in a relatively short period of time. The other major advantage of the three-day diet is that it prepares dieters to build the mental discipline necessary to follow longer and more involved dieting plans. This occurs because the three-day diet forces its users to follow the plan verbatim, with no room for error or divergence. Teaching yourself to become 100 percent compliant to a dietary plan is vital for success, and the three-day diet is a good kickstart to forming this type of discipline and applying it to more substantial plans.

Three-Day Diet Cons

The main drawback to the three-day diet is its incredibly short length. Three days is not a sufficient amount of time to make any real or lasting progress to your physique, and it is more likely than not that you will simply regain the weight you lost in the compensation period immediately following cessation of the diet. This leads to an endless stream of yo-yo dieting, where no real progress is made despite substantial sacrifice (three days' worth at a time). The other major problem with the three-day diet is that it is merely an eating plan without any instructional material explaining the how or whys of dieting or nutrition. This means dieters relying on the three-day plan will find themselves adrift if they decide to forgo the plan as written and attempt to construct their own plan in the future. Therefore, while someone can certainly lose weight on the plan, it does nothing to teach them how to keep the weight off once the plan grinds to a halt.

Most Protective iPhone Case

Heaviest Duty

You don't need to be a foreman or a total klutz to get use out of a heavy duty case. If you're willing to trade sleekness for function, larger (and generally more expensive) enclosures can protect you from everything from drops to dunkings. Even if you're usually sure-handed with your iPhone, it only takes one drop to ruin your day. Brands like OtterBox, LifeProof, and Ballistic offer big, bulky, and in some cases waterproof cases in their product lines.

Midrange

You probably know someone with an OtterBox or similar mid-sized protective case for their smartphone. Though they're less bulky and it's a little easier to operate your phone while using them, most cases in this tier don't offer extra features like waterproofing or more protection from drops and bumps. These cases are often a little less expensive than their larger counterparts as well. Besides the OtterBox, manufacturers like Griffin, iFrogz, and Case-Mate offer products in this range.

Lightweight

These cases are often the smallest, and thus least noticeable, options. They also tend to offer less (and in some cases far less) protection than other rugged covers. If light drop and scratch protection are all you need, options include one-piece gel enclosures of varying thickness, as well as gel-and-plastic shell combination cases. These tend to be the least expensive of the three tiers as well. Case-Mate, iFrogz, and Ballistic are three manufacturers with smaller and lighter options.

Warnings

Different cases have different capabilities. Be sure to carefully read the packaging and any included instructions when you purchase a new case. Improper installation can make the case ineffective or even void its warranty. Some, like the LifeProof, require a short test to ensure full functionality before the manufacturer will honor the warranty. If possible, purchase a case from a retailer with trained salespeople -- in a lot of cases, they can assist you in installation.

High Protein Diet for Muscles

Daily Requirements for Muscle Building

The amount of protein that you need to eat depends upon your weight and body fat percentage. Convert your body weight from pounds into kilograms by dividing the pounds by 2.2. For example, 150 lbs. is 68.18kg. Once you have your body fat percentage, you will need to multiply it by your weight (in kilograms). Take the number you get from that calculation and subtract it from your body weight to get your lean mass weight. For example, 150 lbs. and 15 percent body fat would be 68.18kg multiplied by 15 percent equals 10.23kg. Then 68.18kg minus 10.23kg equals 57.95kg for lean mass body weight. Now that you have the lean mass body weight, you can figure out how much protein you need to eat each day. Get this amount by multiplying your lean mass body weight by 2.75. For example, 57.95kg multiplied by 2.75 equals 159.36g for the 150-lb. person with 15 percent body fat.

Chicken

Chicken is an excellent source of protein that is low in fat content. While the white and dark meat each have a lot of protein, the white meat has less fat. This makes the white meat a better choice from a nutrition standpoint. You can get 35g of protein in one 4-oz. boneless chicken breast.

Seafood

Fish is another great source of protein. While fish is somewhat higher in fat than chicken, the fat in fish is unsaturated fat, which is commonly called the good kind of fat. Tuna is an inexpensive and easy way to get your protein from fish. One can of tuna has roughly 40g of protein. If you prefer something like scallops, you can get 26g of protein from 4 oz. of scallops.

Beef

Beef presents a comparable protein content to chicken. However, beef has a much higher fat content and it is not the same kind of good fat that can be found in seafood. For that reason, only the leanest cuts of beef should be used for a high-protein diet. Vitamin B-12 and creatine can be found in beef, each of which contribute to muscle building. A 4-oz. serving of beef gives you 36g of protein.

Dairy

Dairy foods such as eggs, cheese, yogurt and milk all have a decent protein content that can help build muscles. Like beef, dairy products can be full of saturated fat. Only low-fat dairy products should be used for this reason. One cup of yogurt offers 14g of protein. Four oz. of mozzarella offers 36g, and one egg offers almost 7g.

1. Set up an area for each child to store their belongings, such as coats, lunches and backpacks. It helps each child feel like they belong in the class if they have their own space. Put this space near the door to allow the children to easily put up their belongs when they arrive.

2. Decorate the walls with interesting posters and educational bulletin boards. Be sure to include numbers, alphabets and color posters on the wall. Plan to rotate the decorations throughout the year based on the seasons and what the class is studying. Leave space to hang up artwork created by the children.

3. Create an area for circle time. This area should be on a carpet surface and should have enough room for the entire class to sit comfortably. Sit upons or carpet squares are often good additions for a circle time area because they help the child stay seated.

4. Set up an arts and crafts area. This area should have a floor that is easy to clean up and have tables to work at. There should also be adequate storage area for supplies and a space for artwork to dry, such as a drying rack or additional table. It is helpful to have a sink in this area for easy cleanup.

5. Make a reading corner. Provide a bookshelf that is low enough for children to access all shelves and stock them with favorite preschool books. Be sure to have pillows or comfy chairs.

6. Set up several centers throughout the room. Provide enough space and materials at each center so two to three children can work at a center. Some common centers are music, dramatic play, science, math/manipulative, building and housekeeping. Music centers can contain headphones and CD's for children to listen to music. Provide dress up clothes and accessories at the dramatic play center. Legos, building blocks, and Kapla blocks are popular choices for a building center. A housekeeping center can include a play kitchen, shopping carts and pretend cleaning supplies. The science center can include magnifying glasses to look at items such as rocks, leaves and other collectibles. Put items to count, number cards, linking cubes and pattern blocks in the math center. Be sure to provide storage containers and hooks so that the children can help clean up the centers.

What Is Deep Gum Root Cleaning?

Deep cleaning treats the early stages of gum disease.

Background

Gum disease is caused by bacteria that thrive on tartar and plaque buildups. Gum disease progresses into the foundations of the tooth and, if left untreated, can eventually damage the bone structure of the teeth.

Scaling

Scaling is the process of scraping plaque and tarter off the tooth. In a regular cleaning, dentists scale the part of the tooth that is above the gum line. In deep cleaning, the tooth is scaled above and below the gum line.

Root Planing

Root planing involves smoothing root surfaces and extracting infected tooth structures. Eliminating rough spots where bacteria gather helps eliminate bacteria that cause gum disease.

What to Expect

Anesthetic injections or topical gels are sometimes used to make a deep cleaning more comfortable; some dentists may use antibiotic gels to help kill bacteria. Deep cleaning procedures are sometimes broken down into several appointments.

Recovery

Over-the-counter painkillers can help alleviate discomfort after deep cleaning. Your teeth may bleed or become more sensitive; you should brush and floss gently.

How to Choose Children's Shoes

Shopping for the first pair

1. Wait to buy shoes until your child starts to walk. Research suggests that children develop healthy, well-developed feet when they learn to walk barefoot. Keep their feet toasty and unrestricted with soft booties or warm skid-free socks. Robeez (robeez.com) makes thin but warm leather moccasins in a range of colors and sizes that actually stay on little crawlers' feet.

2. When it's time for your baby's first pair of shoes, take your well rested, recently fed child to a quality children's shoe store that stock brands such as Stride Rite and Elefanten. The best stores have patient and knowledgeable salespeople who are expert at fitting children's feet.

3. Have the salesperson measure the length and width of both of the child's feet. Many babies have an extra wide foot and may need a special size.

4. Make sure the shoes aren't too big, which can cause a baby to trip. First shoes should be soft and pliable to let new walkers feel the ground.

As they grow

5. Have your child's feet measured on a regular basis at a shoe store that specializes in children's shoes. Kids grow fast, and shoe sizes can change from month to month. Really good salespeople can spot evasive maneuvers like scrunched up toes, and know how to woo a reluctant tot out of a parent's lap. Toys and play areas are added bonuses.

6. Head to discount stores, such as Payless ShoeSource, Target and Kmart, which are also great sources for shoes that get limited wear, such as dress shoes. If you're clear about your child's shoe size, you can save a bundle at these discounters. However, many of these stores don't carry wide or narrow shoes.

7. Have your child try both shoes on. Shoes vary in fit, even within the same brand. Toes should have a 1/2-inch (1-cm) clearance, but not much more. Getting one size larger than their foot is typical. Watch your child walk and make sure that the heels don't slip out. If a heel is too wide but the rest of the shoe fits, try heel pads (available at some shoe stores and drugstores).

8. Invest in a good pair of sneakers that your child can wear every day. This pair will take a pounding, so look for quality. Leather holds up better than vinyl, and stitching lasts longer than glue.

9. Take advantage of Velcro fasteners. At some point, though, all kids need to learn to tie shoelaces, so get your preschool-age child at least one pair that ties.

10. For summer months or warm climates, purchase cheap canvas sneakers for playing in the sand box, jumping in puddles or going in the creek. Velcro-strapped sandals are great for tender feet that want to have wet summertime fun.

11. Buy rain and winter boots a size or two bigger. Kids can wear heavier or even doubled socks. Most retailers won't restock boots, even if they sell out of a size, until the following year's season. Be aware that most rain boots don't come in wide sizes; you may have to go up in size to get them wide enough.

Free Fixes for Cyclic Redundancy Check Errors

CRC Recovery

The CRC error occurs when bad data's being read into your system. To repair this, you'll have to restore the data so that it reads correctly. The best way to do this is to restore the file from the source. Whether it's a network problem, bad media or corrupted storage, the file will be unusable until you correct the underlying causes of the error.

Transmission Fix

If your file was sent over a network, check that the network is working. The CRC error can be caused by a problem during transmission. Anything from a collision of data in the network to packet errors can cause corruption of your file, but this is generally the easiest CRC error to fix. You'll need to track down the network error and retransmit a clean version of the file.If you're certain the network is able to transfer files but the file you receive is still experiencing a CRC error, the problem might be with the file itself.

Corrupt File Fix

Your file may be corrupted. Check the file for corruption by attempting to access it with a different reading program or on another computer. If the file reads on another system or with another program, you'll know that the data's safe, and you should reinstall the original access program to try again, use the alternate program that was successful to read the data, or, if it's your system that's the cause of the problems, examine your hard drive. If the file still gives you an error on the second system or with an alternate program, you'll need to reacquire a working version of the file from its source. If the problem is with your hard drive, run scandisk and then defragment your hard drive to fix any errors that might be corrupting your data. If the file is being accessed from an external media source like a CD or DVD, you might have to fix the media before the file is of any use.

CD/DVD Fix

Examine the physical media your file is being accessed from for any visible physical damage or dirt. Either causes CRC errors, so if present, repair or clean your media and try again. If it still doesn't work, try an alternate device, and if it works there, the problem is your own CD/DVD reader, which might need to be replaced. If the data's not accessible after cleaning and is unreadable on a separate device, you'll have to recreate the storage medium, or acquire the file by other methods.

How to setup a Google Android Development Environment

1.

Download and install Eclipse. They call it an integrated development environment (IDE). This is one of those types of tools that every developer should be using. Sure, it's just a glorified text editor, but the same could be said for Microsoft Word.Eclipse is an open source project that became incredibly popular as a general use IDE. Most of the people that I know, regularly use it for C++, Java, and PHP development. Yeah, I know. Maybe I should find some normal friends... Lucky for you though, Eclipse has a simplified install for Windows and OS X. It even comes pre-configured in quite a bit of the distros for you linux users out there. So, if you still have a need... Goto http://www.eclipse.org, click Download. I would choose the version for Java EE developers, as it contains the features required for Andriod development (specifically JDT and WST). Once downloaded, locate the archive file (zip / tar) and extract or expand it to a location that you will remember.Interesting enough, you can run the application from that directory.

2.

Download and install the Google Android SDK. A Software Development Kit is exactly that -- a kit for developing software. This provides the essential libraries needed for Android application development and testing. The download is pretty simple. Go to http://code.google.com/android/download.html, read and agree to the license and click the 'continue' button. Choose the platform that you are currently running on. Once downloaded, locate the archive file and extract or expand it to a location that you will remember. Note the location, as you will need to enter this directory into Eclipse in a moment.

3. Fire up Eclipse. You will need to locate where you installed / extracted Eclipse and execute it to start the application. The first thing you will need to do is create a workspace. Just follow the on-screen instructions as it should prompt you to do this automatically.

4.

Add the Android Eclipse Add-on. Under the 'Help' menu, click on 'Software Updates...'. Click the 'Available Software' tab, then the 'Add Site...' button. Enter the Google Android url (https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/ or http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/), then click 'ok'. Make sure that URL now shows up in the list. Check the box next to 'Developer Tools' and click the 'Install...' button at the top right.

5.

Set your Android SDK location. Alright, so in order for this to work, Eclipse needs to know where you placed the Google Android SDK. Under the 'Window' menu, click on 'Preferences', then select 'Android' on the left. If you know the location, you can just type it in. Otherwise, click browse and find the directory. Once selected, click 'Apply' then 'Ok'.

6.

Develop some applications. Now that your set up is complete. You should be able to create a new 'Android Project'.

Android Software

Operating System

The Android operating system is an open source platform, which means that users can view the source code used to create it. A wide range of mobile devices, including phones and PCs, are shipped with the Android operating system installed on them, in which case the user does not need to do anything to use the Android platform. The Android operating system can also be installed manually on compatible devices and is freely available.

Applications

Some Android applications come pre-installed on devices with the operating system, but many more can be downloaded and installed by the user. The Android Market is the main place applications are downloaded from, as the official source for the platform. The main apps that tend to be pre-installed are Web browsers, email programs and controls for device settings.

Development

Developers for Android include those working on the operating system itself, and on custom applications. Since the operating system is open source, the code can be viewed and accessed by any developer with the expertise and interest. Similarly, anyone can develop Android apps, as the development tools are free to download. The main technologies involved in Android development are the Java programming language and associated technologies including XML and database systems.

Access

Users can access and acquire Android software in different ways. The Android operating system can be freely downloaded over the Web, while the applications tend to be downloaded from app stores, mainly the official Market. Some of the apps cost a set fee to download, while many of them are free. Users can view information and reviews within the application listings, and developers receive 70% of the sales revenue for their apps.

Usage

Once downloaded from the Android Market, apps are automatically installed by the system. Apps can then be launched from within the device menus, or from the home screen in the case of widgets. If the user decides they no longer want an app, they can uninstall it, again through the Market application, but can reinstall apps that are still available if they choose to at any point in the future.

Can I Root the Nextbook Next3?

Rooting Definition

Like all Android devices, the Nextbook Next3 comes stock with a limited user account. This account doesn't allow you to change system files or remove preinstalled applications. Some third-party applications make changes or require access to these files to work correctly. The process of removing the restrictions and gaining superuser permissions is called 'rooting.' The Android operating system is based on Linux, and the name comes from the root account in Linux and other UNIX-based operating systems.

Advantages of Rooting

The Nextbook Next3 has some limitations. Google offers the Android operating system for free under an open source license, but manufacturers must pay a fee for their devices to access certain services such as the Android Market. Since the manufacturer didn't pay the licensing fee, the Next3 has no Market option. Rooting allows you to install the Market app. It also allows you to install customized, third-party versions of the Android operating system called ROMs.

Disadvantages of Rooting

There are two types of root. Soft root gives you only root access until you reboot the tablet. Permanent root will root the Next3 permanently. The main disadvantage of permanent rooting the Next3 is that it voids the warranty, because the practice is considered modifying the device. When you go through the rooting process, if something goes wrong, the tablet might malfunction. If the Next3 becomes unresponsive and won't turn on, you have 'bricked' your tablet. Restoring the stock operating system on the Next3 requires wiping all of the data from the tablet.

Rooting Process

Soft rooting the Next3 requires a third-party application called Universal Androot. Download and install the application using the Next3 Web browser. Once it's installed, open the Universal Androot app from the application screen and select the option to root Android 2.2. A permanent root requires you to download and install a rooted firmware. The install process is similar to the process of installing third-party apps.
