Can the Android Run .Jar?

Java on Android

Running JAR on an Android allows the user to import pre-coded libraries into the mobile applications. Java functions save time because they do not require mobile users to write their own code for certain processes. Android users need to create a JAR folder and specify the .Jar file desired for their application. The .Jar file will be automatically included with the app once it is run on the Android.

Running JAR

To run JAR on an Android, create a JAR folder on a computer. Once the JAR folder has been created, the phone will need to be connected to the computer using the USB cord. When the computer recognizes the mobile device, there will be a list of options; the user will need to choose “Folder,” which will open up the folder space on the mobile device. The .Jar file will then need to be located and dragged into the open folder on the mobile for downloading.

Programming Options

Other ways to program and run JAR on an Android exist. Sync is a program that can also be used to make transferring files to and from the mobile device easier. In some cases, a .jar file may need to be unzipped before downloading to the Android, which might require unzipping software like 7Zip.

.Jar Files

Android and other mobiles devises can have various types of JARs or .Jar files. Java applications can be categorized under games, utilities, multimedia, communications and travel, depending on their function. Mobile users have a wide range of .Jar files they can add to their devices, depending on the needs of the user.

Font Size for an Android

Standard Font

Android devices running Gingerbread version of the OS (2.3) or earlier use the Droid font, which has a simple design with clean lines and minimal flourish. The simplicity of the design makes it easier to read the font on Android devices with smaller screens. Starting with the launch of the Ice Cream Sandwich version of the operating system (4.0), Google changed the standard Android font to Roboto. The Roboto font has wider angles and rounder loops.

Increasing Size

Many Android devices have a set font size for the home screens, menus and tutorial features. However, you can change the font size on certain Google applications. For example, the Gmail app includes a menu option that allows you to increase the font size from normal to 'large' or 'huge.' Third-party applications often have their own font installed. These fonts are designed to fit within the theme of the app. Some apps also include a setting that allows you to increase or decrease the size of the font.

Manufacturer Exceptions

The Android OS runs on different handsets. Some manufacturers allow you to change the font type or size. For example, the Samsung Galaxy I has three different font types, including Choco Cooky, a cursive style font; Cool Jazz, a handwritten style font; and Rosemary, another cursive style font. If offered by your manufacturer, you can change the font through the Settings menu.

Tips

With most touchscreen Android devices you can zoom in on websites or eReader apps by swiping your thumb and forefinger toward the area you want to zoom in on. Zooming increases the font size, which will make it easier to read, especially on text-heavy websites with small fonts.

Gmail Messages Are Stuck in Sending on My Android

The Basics

The most basic check is ensuring you have an Internet connection. If you're not online, your emails will remain stuck with a Sending status indefinitely. Look for data indication icons along the status bar, which is at the top of the phone's display. If you're connected using your provider's cellular network, you should see a green 'E,' '3G' or '4G' icon. If you see those icons but they're white, you don't have an active Internet connection, which could be the problem. If you're connected by Wi-Fi, you should see a green triangular icon indicating the strength of the signal. If you don't have an active connection, you may need to find a better location where you can get a stronger signal or locate a Wi-Fi network. If you are online, another basic fix you should try is to manually refresh your inbox. While viewing your inbox, press the 'Menu' button and tap 'Refresh.' Often this prompts your phone to finally send your emails. Lastly, you should try reopening the email by pressing the 'Menu' button, selecting 'Go to Labels,' then tapping 'Outbox' and then the email itself. Tap the 'Send' button again and wait to see if Gmail will transmit your message.

Auto-Sync

Your Android device has an option that controls background data usage. Background usage is the data that apps transmit and receive without explicitly asking your permission. This includes Gmail receiving and sending emails, Android checking for app updates and various social applications updating feeds and statuses. Disabling this feature reduces your data usage but can keep Gmail from sending your emails until you manually refresh the inbox. To turn this back on, go to the Home screen and press the 'Menu' button; then select 'Settings,' 'Accounts & Sync' to reach the Background Data option. After you successfully send your Gmail messages, you can always disable the background data usage if you prefer.

Device Reset

If your phone settings seem to be correct and you still can't get Gmail to send a message, try resetting your device. This frequently clears up minor errors that may keep your phone from functioning properly, and resetting the phone does not cause you to lose any unsent messages. Press and hold the power button or the 'End Call' button, depending on which button your device has; a list of options appears in a couple of seconds. Tap 'Power Off' to turn the device off. After a few moments, press the power or 'End Call' button again to power it back on. The full startup process may take a few minutes to complete.

Clear Cache

Occasionally apps experience errors that you can correct by clearing the cache. Cached data is information that's temporarily stored on your phone for the app, and if you clear it out, you can sometimes correct obscure errors. You won't lose important data by clearing the Gmail app's cache. Press the 'Home' button to reach the Home screen; then press the 'Menu' button and tap 'Manage Apps,' then tap the 'All' tab. Scroll down to the Gmail app and tap it. Now you can tap the 'Clear Cache' button if it's available; wait a moment for the process to complete. You can also try tapping the 'Clear Data' button, which is on the same screen as the Clear Cache option, but keep in mind that clearing the data can permanently delete some of your saved data, possibly including drafts, unsent items and custom signatures.

What Is Work Process Sampling?

Sampling Techniques

Work process sampling measures a worker's active time. The company analyzes activities and determines the proper amount of time the worker should have with a given project or product area. The company reviews the amount of time it takes to perform a specific task and what equipment is used. This allows the company to understand the abilities required for a specific job function and create or modify work schedules for the task to be completed.

Evaluating Nonproductive Activities

In relation to the active moments of the worker at the job, the company performs work process sampling regarding nonproductive activities. The company evaluates the times when a worker uses the restroom, has a break or converses with other employees. By evaluating the nonproductive times, the company can determine whether workers are overburdened with workloads as the employee struggles to complete tasks during the day. The company may also establishe set time schedules for workers with lighter job activities to be more productive and lessen free time.

Initial Observations

All initial observations are performed to gain an understanding of part of the work process. The company performs these observations at random times and days only known to the person performing the work sampling. This ensures that there is no deception by workers regarding productive and nonproductive activities. Random schedules also allow for work process sampling of irregular work activities unique to certain company operations.

Observation Report

The observations from the work process sampling are documented for further study. The company decides from the samples whether more ongoing observation is required, or creates recommendations and work standards. The company may also perform equipment and system upgrades to streamline the overall work operations.

An alert sometimes appears in the notification area with the message 'USB debugging connected (Select to disable USB debugging).' Disabling USB debugging will stop the automatic synchronization process.

Debug Android Applications

The 'USB Debug Mode' must be on to debug Android applications for Android development purposes. When developing using a Windows computer, a USB driver for adb (Android Debug Bridge) needs to be installed. When developing on a Mac computer, the USB driver for adb doesn't need to be installed. The Android smartphone can be used to test applications before they are launched. In order to test on the Android, it needs to be set up for development and debugging.

Desktop Phone Manager

The USB Debug mode, when turned on, can also allow the Android smartphone to communicate with a desktop phone manager and allow the connection. The connection can be made only via USB cable. MyPhoneExplorer is one of these desktop phone managers. Some Android-powered devices require this option for different file operations. For example, the content and data stored on the desktop computer can be automatically synchronized with the Android phone. USB debugging must be activated. To change the USB debugging mode, the phone must be disconnected from a USB cable and computer.

Rooting the Android

Some programs can root the Android smartphone without the phone user performing any command-line work. USB debug mode allows the phone to communicate with the program automatically. Rooting a smartphone means to add a new user interface, software and other applications to it. Rooting gives the smartphone users the 'root,' or administration access to system files and changing other things on the phone normally set as 'read only.' Custom versions of Android can also be installed. USB debug mode must be on for the smartphone to be rooted.

How to Open Enc Files

1. Double-click the .enc file with which you are working. Move to step 2 if it does not open with the program normally associated with files of that type.

2. Right-click on the file and select 'Properties' from the context menu that opens if you are using Windows. Ctrl+click or right-click on the file and select 'Get Info' from the context menu if you are using a computer running Mac OS. The properties/get info option should indicate the file type and suggest programs that might open it.

3. Select the program with which you will open your .enc file. The file should open in that program. Move to step 4 if your file does not open.

4. Download and install a file reader that will open .enc files. If the file does not open in the reader, there is a possibility that the file is corrupted. If the file opens in the reader, there is a possibility that the program with which the file was created is corrupted or is otherwise malfunctioning.

5. Open the file on the computer on which it was originally created, if possible. If that is not possible, attempt to open the file on a different computer that is running the same software. If the file does not open at this point, it is most likely corrupted, or has been given an erroneous file extension.

Cooties Bar X-Ray Glasses

This simple and silly game involves a man sitting in a bar and wearing X-ray glasses. After being offered the glasses by a strange man in a trench coat, you can scan through the bar and look through the clothes of the patrons of the bar. There are various men and women in the bar, including a devilish nun, a handicapped man and a hermaphrodite. The game is obviously lewd and crude and should not be viewed by anyone under the age of 18. It is available on the New Grounds website.

Cooties Bar X-Ray Vision II

This sequel to the original Cooties Bar game gives additional features, which extend the game play for a few extra minutes. The strange man in a trench coat is back to offer you both regular X-ray glasses and super-powered X-ray glasses. This mature game once again gives you the opportunity to look under people's clothing at the bar, but the super-powered glasses let you look at the patrons' bone structure as well. This strange but free game is available at the New Grounds site.

X-Ray Specs

Another game that lets you look through clothing also lets you look through walls to see the seedy side of the fast-food industry. This game does not last very long but does allow for a few silly X-ray glasses-related jokes. The game seems unfinished and has a few bugs, but it is slightly less crude than the Cooties Bar games. It is available for free on the Most Plays website.

X-Ray Specs Scanner

This game is the only one of the bunch that is available only as an iPhone application. The game costs 99 cents and gives you the ability to undress a guy or a girl with 'special infra-red filters.' Using the camera feature of the iPhone, the game takes a picture of the person in question and undresses them with the click of a button. The application may simply paste a picture of a man or woman in their underwear onto the picture but it may be good for a laugh or two when out at a bar. The download is available at the Game Pro website.

How to Play the Kissing Game

2. Engage in a game of '2 Minute Temptations' during a party if everyone is unattached. Start out with an even number of boys and girls. The boys hide in different closets in the house while the girls aren't looking. The girls go into the closet without knowing who's in there and the couple makes out for two minutes. When they exit the closet they can see the identity of whom they were kissing.

3. Put on red lipstick and play a game of '60 Seconds in Heaven.' The woman puts on red lipstick and goes into the closet with the man where she kisses him in as many spots as she can in 60 seconds. When they come out of the closet they count the red lips on his body. The couple with the most red lips wins the kissing game.

4. Get hot playing 'Body and Ice Kissing.' Take an ice cube and put it in your partner's mouth. Your partner has to run the ice down your body using his mouth. When he reaches your pants he has to run it back up your body and trade it to you using your mouths to make the exchange.

How to Make a Website Android Phone Friendly

1. Reduce the size of graphics and remove any nonessential images. Android device screens are small meaning smaller graphic sizes are necessary so as not to overwhelm these screens. Graphics-heavy websites are also slow to load over 3G connections. Minimizing graphics will increase download speeds.

2. Write clean HTML code for mobile websites. Each Android device model will display a webpage slightly differently. Adhering to W3C guidelines for proper HTML code will ensure that pages display properly across the many Android devices currently on the market.

3. Avoid proprietary technologies such as Flash and Java. Flash is a popular choice for animations on regular websites, but most versions of Android do not support Flash. Other proprietary technologies, like Java, only act to slow down website performance on Android devices. Keep the website clean and free of proprietary technologies.

4. Scale page sizes and layouts for the small screen. Many Android handsets have a WVGA resolution of 800 pixels wide by 480 pixels tall in landscape mode. Create page layouts that cater to smaller resolutions. Doing so allows users to read text more easily while viewing a larger portion of the page without the need to zoom.

5. Remove elements that are not mobile device friendly. Long and complex forms are an example of elements that create headaches for Android device users browsing websites on small, touchscreen devices. Keep the target audience in mind when creating website features. If it does not make sense to include it on a mobile website then remove it.

How to Choose The Right Whey Protein Powder

1. Do I really need to supplement?

The first thing you need to do is decide if you even need to supplement with protein powder. Many people have unrealistic expectations of what protein powder can do for them based on advertisements and magazine articles.Protein powder is simply food. It is not a substance that will make your muscles grow faster or larger. The reason why some people need to use protein powder is because they have difficulties getting the amount of protein they need from their daily diet. I am one of those people. My daily protein needs are about 150g of protein per day. As a busy mom, mixing up a quick protein shake before heading out of the house helps me reach my dietary goals and maintain my sanity.

2. Calories vs. Protein content

Now that you've decided you really need protein powder, take a moment to think about your daily calorie intake. If you're trying to gain mass and add muscle, you probably won't be too worried about how many calories are in your protein powder. But, if you are on a low calorie diet, then the amount of calories suddenly becomes very important.Compare the calories in the protein powder you're considering with the actual amount of protein in each serving. For instance, if one protein powder contains 100 calories and 22 grams of protein, then it's better than a powder that contains 80 calories and only 10 grams of protein. Sure, you're saving some calories with the 80 calorie powder, but it has less then half of the protein. That means you're just getting more filler instead of protein.

3. Price and Taste

Protein powder can be pretty expensive, but if you look at it as actual food, it suddenly seems much more affordable. You want to make sure you're getting plenty of protein for your buck, but you also don't want to make the mistake of buying an economy size tub of a protein powder that you can't even gag down. The most affordable way to buy whey protein is in large tubs ranging from 3 to 10 pounds. To avoid being stuck with a powder you can't stand, buy a smaller container first, or see if the company offers a sampler kit, or even single serving envelopes of powder. At the very least, search on the internet for user reviews to see what other people say about the taste of the protein powder.

How to Reduce Oil Sludge

1. Recognize if your engine is prone to mechanical failure caused by oil sludge in the engine. While any engine can potentially develop oil sludge, some are more prone to the problem than others. If your car has an engine with a known history of sludge problems, take extra care to protect your car from sludge damage.

2. Switch the products that you use for engine oil. Never use conventional motor oil if you are concerned about oil sludge. You should switch to a purely synthetic motor oil, such as Castrol GTX or Mobile 1. These oils may cost more, but they are much cleaner and will reduce the chances of sludge developing, as well as cleaning away any existing sludge. You should also use the largest oil filter that will fit on your car, to help remove as much debris as possible.

3. Change your oil frequently. Some manufacturers will recommend that you change your oil every 5,000 or 7,500 miles. Over time, they have changed this to increase the frequency of oil changes. If you are fighting oil sludge, your motor oil and filter should be changed every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first. Changing it more frequently will not hurt.

4. Perform a Seafoam treatment every 18,000 miles, or every sixth oil change. Seafoam is a brand of engine treatment that will push its way through the passages where oil flows. This cleans any sludge out and washes it into the oil pan, where it can be easily drained away. Not only will the Seafoam treatment help fight the battle against oil sludge, but you will probably notice improved gas mileage after using the product.

5. Take your car to the mechanic every 40,000 miles to have the engine flushed. Flushing the engine will completely clear any passages and make the inside of the engine like new. This treatment is done in place of the Seafoam treatment mentioned in Step 4.

6. Monitor your engine closely. If you start to see oil appear on the top of the engine, it could be an indication that your PCV valve has become clogged and is leaking oil. Replacing the valve is an inexpensive repair that can increase your car's performance. Ignoring the problem could lead into serious problems. Keep a close watch for oil on the engine, and replace the PCV valve as soon as it is noticed.

How to Install DLL Files

1. Find out the full name of the DLL file that you require (for example, esck_001.dll). Write this down in a notepad document or on a piece of paper.

2. Use Google, or some other search engine, to locate the DLL. You can usually find these types of files on DLL collection websites (see Resources).

3. Follow the on-screen steps to download the file to your computer. Save it in an easily accessible location such as your desktop, or your 'My Documents' folder. Make sure not to rename the DLL file when downloading.

4. These files usually come within a .zip document. Right-click on the .zip, and select the option 'extract here.' This will place the .dll file just outside of the .zip file, so that you can access it.

5. Right-click on the .dll file, and select 'cut.'

6. Navigate to your root drive (usually C:), and then to 'Windows' and 'system32.' Anywhere in this folder, right click on the screen, and select 'paste.' This will copy the DLL into the registry folder for Windows.

7.

Go to your start menu, and open the 'Run' program. In the text area, type 'regsvr32' then the path and name of the DLL file you just copied (for example, type 'regsvr32 C://windows/system32/esck_001.dll'). This will open the registry registrar program for Windows, and it will automatically register the DLL that you just copied into the system folder.

iPhone Apps and File Extensions

Languages

Apps for the iPhone are primarily developed in Objective-C. This is an object-oriented programming language that is built atop the older C programming language. The syntax of Objective-C is similar to C and C++, and developers can integrate code from these languages directly into Objective-C programs. Source code files usually use the extension '.m' or '.mm' and header files with library data usually use the '.h' extension.

iPhone SDK

Apple provides iPhone app developers with a software development kit (SDK) to make app development quicker. The SDK contains library components that allow apps to access and use the features of both the iPhone's hardware and its iOS operating system with a minimum of code. These are in addition to other Objective-C based programming tools that Apple provides anyone for creating application interfaces and packaging different app components into a single program.

.Ipa File Extension

Apple has its own system for transferring packaged apps onto the iPhone for execution. To use these systems, programmers use the iPhone SDK to package program components into a '.ipa' files. iPhone developers then either use the SDK's tools for directly installing an .ipa package on iPhones and iPods, or go through Apple's procedures for uploading the package to Apple's App Store. Once an .ipa package is in the App Store, anyone can download the program onto their devices.

.Deb File Extension

While Apple's official channels for installing apps require the program components to be packaged in the .ipa format, there are third-party tools that let iPhone users transfer apps to their devices outside of the SDK's tools or the App Store. These alternative app repositories are legal, but Apple discourages its customers from circumventing its software controls, also known as 'jailbreaking,' in order to use them. Alternative repositories usually have programmers package their apps in the '.deb' format for user download.

Can I Get Microsoft Word on My Android Phone?

Why No Word?

The programming that creates all of the features in Microsoft Word is too extensive for mobile platforms like the Android. Its operating system is stripped down compared to a full computer operating system and the hardware is designed for portability, speed and battery life rather than heavy computing. This means it needs special versions of any compatible computer software, and Microsoft has not released a full mobile version of any Office Suite programs.

Finding Apps

You can locate apps that let you work with Word documents by selecting the Android Market app on your phone. Select the search icon at the top of the page, and then type in key terms such as 'Word doc' or 'Read word documents' or 'Edit .doc files.' Each phrase will bring up a variety of apps. Read the descriptions to find out which features each one has and check the user ratings to find out how the apps hold up to their delivered promises. Be careful selecting apps, as the Android Market has no system for verifying that apps perform as expected or deliver a secure user experience.

Recommended Apps

Two of the most fully-featured Word apps for Android are Quickoffice Pro and Documents to Go Premium. Both are full office suites that work with Word, Excel and PDF files. Quickoffice Pro includes features such as speech-to-text dictation for creating Word documents without typing and the ability to insert images into your documents. Documents to Go Premium supports adding tables and tracking your changes for editing documents, although this feature has some limitations. Both allow rich text formatting and integration with cloud storage services like Dropbox for easy file syncing with your computer. Both work with .doc and .docx files and can create new documents directly on your Android.

Considerations

Android apps may have trouble with Word documents that include advanced features not available within each app, such as heavy formatting with special fonts and layouts. The apps may simply not show these items, or they may strip them from the document, depending on the app. Always keep a backup of your original Word document when first working with an Android app. This way, you can find out what the app will handle without losing any important work.
