How to Use Text to Speech on Android

1. Open the Java file for the class you want to use the Text-To-Speech function in. Add the following import statements at the top of your file:import android.speech.tts.TextToSpeech;import android.speech.tts.TextToSpeech.OnInitListener;import java.util.Locale;These are required for using Text-To-Speech and for setting the locale you wish to target.

2. Alter your Java class to use Text-To-Speech. To use the Text-To-Speech functionality, your class must implement the correct interface. Alter your class declaration as follows:public class SpeechClass extends Activity implements OnInitListenerThis example code is an Android Activity class. You should use whichever class name your code already has; the only change you need to make is adding 'implements OnInitListener' to the class declaration.

3. Create an instance of the 'TextToSpeech' object. This is the main object you will need, so add it as an instance variable near the top of your class declaration, before your 'onCreate' method:private TextToSpeech tts;Inside the 'onCreate' method for your Activity, instantiate the Text-To-Speech object:tts = new TextToSpeech(this, this);Your class now has a usable Text-To-Speech object providing access to the resource functionality.

4. Implement the 'onInit' method. Your Integrated Development Environment (IDE) may have been highlighting the fact that you have not yet implemented the interface specified in the class declaration. To address this, add the following method outline to your class:public void onInit(int arg0) {//text to speech code here}This is the method required to use the Text-To-Speech functionality and will contain the code which sets you up to access it.

5. Call the Text-To-Speech functions within your application. Inside the 'onInit' method, add the following code:tts.setLanguage(Locale.US);You can target any locale you like, but this targets U.S. English. Wherever you want your speech to take place in your class, you can do so using the following syntax:String speechText = 'Hello';tts.speak(speechText, TextToSpeech.QUEUE_FLUSH, null);Save your code and run the application to test it.

Can I Make Android Apps With Visual Basic?

Visual Basic Overview

Microsoft's fortunes began in the 1970s with their Basic interpreter for the Altair kit computer. Microsoft has made continual improvements to its Basic in the decades since. Visual Basic combined the Microsoft Basic compiler with an IDE. A Visual Basic programmer could add graphical user interface or GUI components such as menus, check-boxes, dialog boxes, radio boxes and lists-boxes to his application with the click of a mouse. Visual Basic versions up to 6.0 compiled sources to native Intel x86 code. The most recent version of Basic – Visual Basic 2010 – compiles code that works only with the .NET Common Language Runtime.

.NET For Android

You cannot write an Android application with any version of Microsoft's Visual Basic, at time of publication. The .NET language C# and the CLR are functionally similar to Java and the Java Virtual Machine. Visual Basic 2010 applications, however, will not run on the JVM or Google's Dalvik JVM work-alike. The software company Xamarin sells a tool for C# programmers that produces Android applications using the Microsoft-sanctioned .NET clone, Mono. Unfortunately, Xamarin's Mono for Android does not support Visual Basic 2010 or any other version of Visual Basic due to a missing Microsoft-developed library component.

Basic4android

All is not lost, however, for Visual Basic fans who want to write Android apps. Basic4android is a commercial, Windows-based subset of the Visual Basic language that features an IDE, a graphical visual editor, built-in documentation, a step-by-step debugger and support for objects. Basic4android compiles your Basic source code to Dalvik-compatible, Virtual Machine bytecode. Basic4android also helps you create Android application package or APK files for simple installation on the user's Android device. Basic4android supports Android versions 1.6 and up.

Google Simple Language

Another Visual Basic-like for Android solution is the free, open source Simple Compiler and Runtime system from Google. Simple is not a full-featured, general purpose language such as Visual Basic or even Basic4android. The aim of the Simple is to produce a Android app tool that is easy to learn and easy to use. Unlike Basic4android that is Windows only, Simple works under Mac OS X and Linux operating systems.

How to Create Interactive Widgets for the Android

1. Open the Java Eclipse editor and the project in which you want to display the widget. Double-click the XML file in the 'resource' directory and the Java source code file in the left navigation panel.

2. Create the button for the interactive widget. The button displays results after the user taps it on an Android device. Add the following XML code to the XML file:

android:layout_height='wrap_content'

android:layout_width='wrap_content'

android:text='@string/sayhello'

android:onClick='helloFunction' />The button's name is set as 'sayhello.' When the user taps the button, the 'helloFunction' function triggers. After you create the interactive button, you must create the Java function that runs the code to display feedback to the user.

3. Switch to the Java source code file you opened previously. In this file, you create the widget's function. For instance, in this example, the text 'Hello, World' displays on the screen:public void helloFunction(View view) {

TextView tv = new TextView(this);

tv.setText('Hello, World');

setContentView(tv);

}

4. Save the changes and click the Eclipse 'Run' button in the main menu to review your button functionality.

Can You Hook Up an Android Phone to a Laptop Download Apps?

Connecting to Computer

You can connect your Android phone to your laptop with the included USB cable. When you make this connection, your phone will ask how you wish to connect. If you choose the option as a 'Disk Drive' or 'USB Drive,' you will be able to open your phone like a separate drive to browse files. You can also copy and paste files to and from your SD card, just like you would move files between folders or drives on your computer.

Application Files

When you download an application to your computer, it uses the format '.APK.' After you transfer the file to you SD card, making sure to remember the location, you can disconnect your Android phone from your laptop. Then, you can launch a file manager such as Astro or ES File Explorer to launch the file on your phone. Alternatively, if you have an installer such as AppInstaller on your phone, you can use that to launch the file. Installation will begin directly from your SD card. However, you must already have a file manager installed so that you can open the files.

Application Sites

Neither the Android Market nor the Amazon Appstore provide .APK files for download to your computer. Thus, you cannot hook up your Android phone to your laptop to download applications. However, some third-party application sites allow you to download these files directly. Appolicious and App Brain are two sites that all direct downloads of application files. In addition to this, you may be able to download applications in .APK format directly from the creator's website.

Considerations

If you simply prefer to browser application markets from your computer, you can register your phone so you can wirelessly push application downloads to it. This requires a Wi-Fi or network connection, however. Amazon Appstore and the official Android Market provide this functionality, so you do not have to connect your phone to your laptop with a USB cable. You can even register multiple Android devices with your account to send applications to one or more. When you use the official market or Amazon store, the stores will keep track of applications that you have previously downloaded, even if you uninstall them.

Workouts for Weight Loss

Cardio

The incorporation of a cardiovascular routine is good for burning large amounts of calories. The goal behind cardio is to increase your heart rate for an extended period of time. This can be anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes per session depending on your current fitness level and capability. Cardio is any type of motion that can accomplish this goal. This can be walking, running, swimming, bike riding, using an elliptical machine or cycling machine. You can also accomplish this through playing sports such as basketball, racquetball, tennis or golf. Your mission is to pick activities that you can enjoy. This will keep you consistent with performing a regular schedule.

Strength Training

The proper way to burn calories and fat should be completed by using less resistance and more reps. The end result is the creation of stronger and leaner muscle tissue throughout your body. One of the greatest benefits of strength training is that while your body is resting and sleeping, your muscles continue to break down. This means you burn a large number of calories well after the workout is finished. This increases your metabolism and can last for as long as 24 hours.This type of activity should be done on days where cardio is not being performed for two or three days of the week. Avoid strength training on consecutive days as your body needs a break to rebuild your muscles. Strength building exercises can be crunches, squats, push-ups, triceps pull-downs, military press, bench press, assorted dumbbell lifts and lunges. The most effective fat burning technique is one that will have you performing 3 sets of 10 reps of each station with short rest in between each different exercise. Move from exercise to exercise for a period of 20 to 30 minutes of continuous work.

Schedule

A good schedule is one that will keep you burning calories every day of the week through a series of breaking down and rebuilding muscle and an increased metabolism. Cardio activities can be performed anywhere from three days per week to every day depending on your level of ability. Strength training should be kept at two to three days of the week. An example looks like the following:Monday, Wednesday and Friday perform cardio for 20 to 60 minutes.

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (optional) strength training should be performed for 20 to 40 minutes.

How to Calculate 3 Phase Motor Power Consumption

1. Understand the difference in how power consumption is calculated for conventional and three-phase power circuits. In a conventional electric circuit, power (in watts) is equal to the voltage multiplied by the amperage. For a three-phase circuit, watts equal volts times amperes times the square root of 3.

2. Determine the voltage and amperage when the motor is running. Most three-phase motors are large devices and have their own readouts. However, you can measure the current (amperes) in some cases. An ammeter rated for three-phase applications will do the job and works much like an ordinary ammeter. You plug the motor into the ammeter and the ammeter into the power line. Be extremely careful in following manufacturer’s instructions, because three-phase applications generally draw a great deal of power.

3. Calculate three-phase motor power consumption by multiplying amps by volts by the square root of three (W = AV(sqrt 3). For example, if the motor is drawing 30 amps at 250 volts, you have 30 x 250 x sqrt 3 (about 1.73) = 12,975 watts).

4. Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing the number of watts by 1,000. Thus, a three-phase electric motor drawing 12,975 watts is consuming 12.975 kilowatts. For one hour, this equals 12.975 kilowatt/hours

Map Editor Tutorial for Age of Empires 2: The Conquerors

The Menu Concepts

In the map editor, you can choose whether to start a map from scratch, choose from a variety of prebuilt map types or pick one at random.The terrain section lets you add some life to your map. Pick a type of terrain and paint it on the map. You may mix and match any way you like. You may also adjust elevation. Create mountains, hills and valleys and make your map as perilous or expansively uninteresting as you want. Combine this with the cliff selection, and you can have very varying maps.With the map copy option, you can copy the entire area and place it somewhere else. The player section allows you to modify players on the map. Set the age of the players, the amount of resources they have and other general information. Use the unit section to give players advantages by placing buildings, heroes and other items on the map. Set them wherever you want--the player that spots them first will convert them to his side.Use the diplomacy section to create alliances between players. It is important to set alliances for all players of interest--if one army is in alliance with another, make sure the alliance is set both ways.The global victory section lets you decide what kind of game type is in play and how players win. Set to exploration, conquest or relics. Decide what objectives need to be completed. This is the section where you set the rules and conditions for all of the players.Options, messages and cinematics fall in similar categories. The option section allows you to test things. If you've created events, or triggers, you can give your players the resources they need to try it out and make sure it's successful. The messages section allows you to set the messages seen by the players when certain conditions are met. If you're feeling really creative, you can use the cinematics section to insert your own .avi movies to be played at key instances in game play.

Triggers

Triggers are codes you can apply to your map to create special scenarios. A trigger can be created to spawn enemies, initiate a cut scene or even destroy an entire town while the map you created is being played. Triggers affect the way the entire game plays out--from when a new section of the story takes place to when healing units use their abilities.After applying some triggers, test out your game to make sure it's doing everything you want it to do and that the game flows and makes sense. Don't make it too easy, and don't make it impossible. If you can't get your scenario to end the way you want it to, check your triggers. Make sure they're turned on and off at appropriate parts so you can finish the game.

2. Tap 'Accounts & Sync.' You should see your Google Account listed. Tap it to see a list of Google services you can sync on the phone. Tap any that are listed as having sync turned off to turn sync on.

3. Press the 'Home' button and then go back to the Settings menu. Tap 'Privacy.' If the Back Up My Data box is not checked, tap it to check it. Press 'Home' again. Wait a few minutes for your data to back up.

4. Turn the new phone on for the first time. As part of the initial setup process, you need to enter a Google Account. Enter the same account information that you used on the old phone. Finish setting up the phone according to your wireless carrier's instructions. Set the phone aside for awhile. Google sends information to your new phone, including your Google services, your apps and data. You should also see some settings change. How long this takes depends upon how many apps you have.

5. Go to the Apps menu on the new phone. If you are not sure where to find it, check the manual. Different manufacturers put it in different places. Look through your apps to see what transferred. Most, if not all, of the apps you had on the old phone should be installed. If the two phones do not use the same version of the Android OS, apps not optimized for the new phone's OS version will not have transferred. You can still download them from the Android Market.

What Is the Motorola X Root?

What Rooting Does

By default, the Android operating system locks the system files in the root directory. You cannot change the files, or run third-party programs that make changes to the files. Some third-party programs require access to these files to run properly. Rooting is the process of removing these restrictions.

Reasons to Root

Some carriers have opted to remove certain functions of the Android operating system. For example, the base version of Android 2.2 allows you to use the device as a tethered modem over Wi-Fi. Many carriers opted to remove this function from their handsets. When you root your Droid X, you can install third-party software that restores this functionality. Rooting your device also allows you to get rid of pre-installed applications where the carrier has removed the uninstall feature. Since the file that instructs the phone which carrier's network to use is protected, rooting is also an essential step in flashing the phone to a different carrier. If you don't like the stock version of the Android OS, you can also flash a custom ROM after rooting.

Reasons Not to Root

The main drawback is that some carriers will void the warranty on the device if they discover the Droid X has been rooted. However, you can get around this by restoring the stock ROM. If you need to submit the Droid X for repair, loading the stock ROM will restore it to factory state. Another disadvantage is it is possible for programs to make changes that cause the phone to become unstable. You can avoid this problem by making a recovery file as soon as you root the Droid X. Install the Droid X Recovery Bootstrap program from the Android market and select 'Reboot Recovery' to launch the recovery console where you can create and restore backup images.

Rooting Process

Rooting the Motorola Droid X is a fairly simple process. To root the Droid X, install a program called z4root. Open the phone's browser and enter 'http://static.droidnetwork.net/wicked/files/z4root.1.3.0.apk' in the address bar. The Droid X may ask if you want to install the file. Click 'Allow' if prompted. The file will download and install automatically. Once the download finishes, press the 'Home' button and open the application tray. Touch 'z4root' and touch 'Root.' Select 'Permanent Root' if you want root access on a permanent basis, or 'Temporary Root' if you only need it to uninstall some programs or make temporary changes.

Can I Delete Desktop.INI Files?

Deleting

To delete Desktop.INI files, browse to the desired file using Windows Explorer or My Computer, right click the file and then select 'Delete' from the menu that appears. You may wish to open the file beforehand and look for a line that starts with 'IconFile.' Any folders or files appearing after the equal sign on this line can also be safely deleted. Many Windows folders contain Desktop.INI files. Ensure that you are in the target folder before proceeding.

View System and Hidden Files

Desktop.INI files have the System and Hidden attributes enabled. They do not appear in the standard Windows Explorer or My Computer configuration. You must enable the viewing of both System and Hidden files before the Desktop.INI file can be deleted. In Windows 7 and Vista, open 'Appearance and Personalization', and then click 'Folder Options.' In Windows XP, select 'Folder Options' from the 'Tools' menu in Windows Explorer or My Computer. Click the 'View' tab and then uncheck the 'Hide protected operating system files' box. In Windows Vista and XP, select the 'Show hidden files and folders' radio button. In Windows 7, select the 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives' radio button.

Creating

To create a Desktop.INI file, first ensure that the folder it resides in has the System attribute enabled. Open the Command Prompt, and use the CD command to browse to the folder containing the target folder. Enter 'attrib +s

' and then press 'Enter.' Replace '

' with the name of the folder. Next, open Notepad and enter '[.ShellClassInfo]' on the first line. Enter the desired options on subsequent lines. For example, enter 'IconFile=

' to specify a custom icon for the folder. Replace '

' with the relative path to the icon file. Save the file as 'Desktop.INI' in the root of the target folder. Ensure that you select 'Unicode' next to 'Encoding' when saving.

Hiding

Consider hiding System and Hidden files from view, rather than deleting Desktop.INI files. Desktop.INI files are small text files and minimal disk space gains are made by deleting them. Additionally, it is good practice to hide files with these attributes, as inadvertent deletion of other System and Hidden files can result in major problems. In Windows 7 and Vista, open 'Appearance and Personalization', and then click 'Folder Options.' In Windows XP, select 'Folder Options' from the 'Tools' menu in Windows Explorer or My Computer. Click the 'View' tab and then check the 'Hide protected operating system files' box. In Windows Vista and XP, select the 'Do not show hidden files and folders' radio button. In Windows 7, select the 'Do not show hidden files, folders, and drives' radio button.

How to Use Insulin to Build Muscle

1. Do a short carbohydrate depletion. Eliminate as many carbohydrates as possible during the day. Fiber, fruits and vegetables are fine, but no sugar or starches. The only exceptions to this rule are meals after a workout (protein shakes) and dinner. If you deprive yourself of carbohydrates, insulin sensitivity increases for a time. This will help you build more muscle. After a workout, have 50 to 100 g of carbohydrates and 30 to 60 g of protein within 2 hours. Sip on the shake, don't drink it all at once.

2. Do a 1- to 3-day carbohydrate depletion. This method uses a little longer carbohydrate depletion. It not only increases your insulin sensitivity for the next time you have carbs but also helps deplete your body of more stored sugar. For 1 to 3 days, eat as few carbs as possible, no more than 50 g per day (not including fiber). Keep your calories high, eating lots of protein, meat and dairy. After 1 to 3 days, finish off with a good workout to burn as much sugar as possible out of your body, then have a protein shake with 100 g of carbs. At this point, eat as many carbohydrates as you can during the next 24 hours. Also, keep your protein intake high for those 24 hours, but cut back on your fat intake.

3. Do a 1- to 2-week carbohydrate depletion. This is a little more extreme and more difficult to do. The same rules as above apply: 50 g of carbs per day (not including fiber). However, with this method you want to try to consume at least 2 g of protein for every pound of body weight. So, if you weigh 175 lb., you need to eat 350 g of protein ever day. This will help your body build muscle and will help you lean up too. Eat as much of your protein from food as possible; try to have no more than 1 protein shake, 2 at most, per day. Come off this 1- to 2-week diet the same way as above, but you can continue to consume extra carbohydrates for 2 to 3 days instead of just 1. Be careful, though. If you go too long on the high-carb diet, you will likely have a spillover effect and start storing some of it as fat. Two days is plenty, then go back on a moderate carb diet for 2 weeks before trying again.

Tips Tricks for Losing Weight Fast

Eat Less, Exercise More

If you want to lose weight fast, the best method is simply to eat less and exercise more. It may seem like a simple solution, but it is also the most effective component in losing weight. Try controlling your portions by filling your plate with a normal amount of food and then put a quarter of it back. If you get hungry later, you can eat it then. Try this for a couple days and then try doing it with half of your normal portion. In just a few days, you will be eating less and feeling satisfied.As for exercise, it just comes down to simple math. You have to burn more calories than you ingest. That means if you take in 2,000 calories each day, you have to find something to burn at least that many calories or else those extra calories get stored as fat in your body. One way to do this is to find a vigorous sport or hobby that you enjoy so you will want to exercise every day. For instance, if you enjoy tennis, try to play as often as possible so you will enjoy burning those calories.

Natural Diuretics

Natural diuretics are foods (usually herbs) that help your body rid itself of excess water. Many people who need to lose weight typically have excess fluids that their body is retaining and diuretics can shed those fluids quickly. Dandelion, juniper and ginger are three of the most popular natural diuretics and you can find them at your local whole foods store. Parsley, melons, asparagus and artichokes also have diuretic properties that help flush your body's excess fluids. Coffee, tea and soda are diuretics, but to a lesser degree.You can also follow a diet plan that reduces the amount of water that your body retains. Eating small amounts of breads, rice and other starchy carbohydrates contributes to a lower level of excess fluids in your body. Avoid salty and sugary foods, too, because these types of products tend to retain water. Be sure to drink plenty of water and unsweetened teas to help your body flush out fluids. A variety of fruits and vegetables also contributes to a healthy diuretic diet plan.

Detoxify Your Body

Detoxifying your body is like flushing out excess water, but it also cleanses your body of other toxins that are weighing you down. Before taking any detoxification products or starting a detox regimen, you need to stop smoking, quit drinking coffee and alcohol, and cut out saturated fats and sugar from your diet. Also, reduce as much stress as you can because stress releases hormones into your system. This can create toxins in your body and slow down a detoxification process.Detoxification programs typically follow a seven-day schedule. During the first two days, you should fast and only drink liquids like water, natural fruit juices and herbal teas. For the next five days, follow a healthy diet plan with plenty of fiber, fresh fruits and vegetables (beets, cabbage, seaweed, radishes, etc.) and plenty of water. In addition, taking hot showers or sweating in a sauna helps rid your body of toxins by eliminating them through perspiration.
