How to Learn Lebanese Arabic

Learning Lebanese Arabic

1. Visit Omniglot.com (see Resources below) to learn the form and pronunciation of the Arabic alphabet (properly called an abjad) used in Lebanese Arabic. Learning the Arabic abjad is important when studying any form of Arabic, although less so in the case of Lebanese because the language is not commonly written. If you already speak another form of Arabic, compare the pronunciations you know to the ones you find at Omniglot; if you do not speak another form of Arabic, learn only those ones used in Lebanese, as you do not need to confuse yourself this early in the process. Also note that the Latin writing system found at the bottom of the Omniglot page is only hypothetically useful, and is not the system in use for writing Lebanese in the Latin alphabet.

2. Visit Cedarseed.com (see link below) to learn the pronunciation of Lebanese using the Latin alphabet, which is a common practice, especially online and in teaching resources for foreigners. There are many characters that will be easy to learn, but also several problem characters. Using Cedarseed.com's system, these include: j (zh), ' (a glottal stop, commonly referred to as the sound English-speakers make between the words 'uh-oh'), kh (Spanish j), gh (French or German r), r (rolled r), 3 (air rolled from the bottom of the throat), and 7 (a hard h). There are also semantic differences in Lebanese between long and short vowels (a vs. á, for instance).

3. Use Cedarseed.com's (see Resources below) well-ordered lessons to learn the basics of the language. Although written somewhat casually, this website is the best online and free resource for learning specifically Lebanese Arabic. Links to 20 chapters as well as several other fun and educational resources can be found at the bottom of the page, including features found only in Lebanese Arabic, as Lebanese has been highly influenced by other languages, mainly French and English.

4. Obtain a textbook for Lebanese Arabic. Two useful texts are available for English-speakers wishing to learn Lebanese: Hadia Harb's 'Arabic You Need' and 'Spoken Lebanese' by Maksoud N. Feghali (see links to both below). Both come with coordinated audio recordings, which are important in learning Lebanese, giving you the chance to hear native speakers interacting with each other and thus the best idea of the language's sounds. Feghali's book uses only Latin characters, which enhances the idea is that Lebanese is truly a spoken language.

5. Find a place where you can practice conversational Lebanese Arabic. This could be an organized discussion group or simply a shop or restaurant where you know Lebanese Arabic is spoken. Speaking with natives is one of the best ways to make progress, as you can learn colloquial speech from them as well as benefit from them correcting your mistakes.

How Do I Check What Files Are Running on a PC?

What Is the Task Manager?

The Windows Task Manager is a way to get a look inside your computer through the Windows operating system. The Task Manager is included with the Windows installation and enables you to see detailed information about how your computer is performing. It shows what applications are running, the CPU usage, network activity and system services. More importantly, it shows the processes currently running so that you can see what files are operating in the background. From here you can forcibly stop any process that is hindering the operation of your PC.

Opening the Task Manager

Press Alt+Ctrl+Delete on your keyboard. In Windows Vista or Windows 7, another screen will appear that will ask you what you want to do. Click on 'Start Task Manager.' In earlier versions of Windows, the Task Manager will just appear. Click on the 'Applications' tab to see all of the applications that are running. If you want to forcibly stop a frozen application, click the application to highlight it and then click 'End Task.'Click on the 'Processes' tab. This is all the processes, or files, that are running in the background. You will see the name, the user name of the person running the process (if several users have logged in and used the computer), how much CPU the process is using, the amount of memory it is using and the description for the file. Go through the list to see all of the files that are running on the computer. To free up memory and CPU usage, you can highlight a process and click on 'End Process.' The only processes that are safe to close are the ones that have a user listed in the 'User Name' column. Processes that are listed as SYSTEM or LOCAL SERVICE in the User Name column are processes used by the PC or Windows. These are much more dangerous to close if you don't know what they are.

Problems of Piston Rings

Loss of Compression

If the piston rings are not seated properly in their grooves or if they become too worn, they can allow the gas-and-air mixture that burns in the combustion chamber above the piston to leak between the piston and cylinder. When this happens, the engine loses power because the expanding gases can escape --- for example, the car might hesitate when you step on the gas pedal, or it might lose power when you are climbing hills. There will always be a little leakage because no seal can be perfect, but worn rings allow so much leakage (called 'blow-by gases') that engine performance is adversely affected.

Burning Oil

Engine oil forms a thin layer between the piston and cylinder to minimize friction and let the engine work more easily. The piston rings are involved in both spreading oil on the cylinder walls and scraping excess oil off of them. When the rings get too worn, they stop doing their job, and the excess oil is burned during the combustion process. They can also scratch -- or 'score' -- the cylinder walls and allow extra oil to seep into the combustion chamber. Not only does the engine begin burning up oil, the exhaust becomes smoky. In addition, the burnt oil creates excess carbon which deposits itself on the valves, pistons and cylinder walls; this also contributes to the engine's loss of performance.

Overheating

You may not have known that piston rings help control heat buildup in the engine. With so much heat being created during combustion, those thin rings siphon off much of the heat and transfer it to the oil on the cylinder walls. The oil is then scraped off and cycled through the system, giving it a chance to cool, and fresh oil is spread along the cylinder walls to help keep them cooler. If the rings are not doing their job, so much heat can build up that the piston will expand and 'seize up' the engine, or it might just melt. If the rings allow 'blow-by gases,' the hot gases can carry that heat deep into the engine and cause damage in the crankcase; they can also contaminate the oil so it will not do its job.

Encryption on the Android

Background

Beginning with Android version 2.3.4, which is nicknamed “Gingerbread,” Android smartphones began to natively support device-level encryption. Among the first devices to take advantage of this additional layer of security were the Droid Bionic and the Samsung Galaxy S II. In addition, Google’s tablet operating system, Android 3.0, nicknamed “Honeycomb,” also includes native support for device-level encryption. However, according to a May 2011 article by InfoWorld, about 99.7 percent of the Android devices still run a version of Android that is 2.3.3 or older, meaning they don’t have device-level encryption.

Device Encryption

Device-based encryption uses a file-based encryption filter that locks the user’s device using a personal identification number (PIN), which prevents the device from being used unless the PIN is entered. Many companies require smartphones being used by employees to have device-level encryption in order to connect to the Microsoft Exchange Server and access corporate data, such as email, calendar and contacts. The lack of device encryption in earlier versions of Android made some information technology organizations wary of allowing employees to use Android phones or tablets, according to a January 2011 Ars Technica article.

Software Encryption

While device encryption is missing on older versions of the OS, Android 2.2 supported software-level encryption, according to an October 2010 article by Network World. This meant that data used by software applications installed on the device were protected. However, software level encryption is “less of a roadblock” to potential hackers than device encryption, Tim Armstrong, a Kaspersky Lab researcher, told Network World.

Older Versions

Owners of devices that run older versions of Android can consider installing a third-party software application that offers the more secure device encryption. In March 2011, software company Whisper Systems released an application called WhisperCore, which provides full disk encryption for data stored on Android devices, according to a CNET article. The app makes it possible for the user to set a passphrase, which creates a key that protects the data saved on the device, CNET reported.

Considerations

In a June 2011 report, antivirus software company Symantec found that older versions of Android, specifically those earlier than Android 2.3.4 for smartphones and 3.0 for tablets, use only an “isolation model” rather than hardware encryption to protect devices. This means that applications are isolated from the Android kernel, the main component of the operating system. How to Use Root on Android

1. Install custom ROMs on your Android smartphone. By gaining root, you can ultimately install a custom recovery application, which in turn lets you use Android builds developed by the Android development community. These ROMs, while not always stable, usually add features or performance upgrades when compared to stock ROMs offered by carriers. For example, some ROM builds strip out all of the pre-installed carrier software, giving you more app installation space and allowing your phone to run more smoothly.

2. Overclock your Android phone's processor. Overclocking is not a feature built in to the Android operating system, but it can be added if you have root access and an overclocking application installed that is compatible with your device. By overclocking, you can make your phone's processor work faster than it does by default.

3. Enable features that would otherwise be unavailable for your phone. When a new Android device comes out, it will sometimes have an exclusive feature included with its Android OS that other phones running Android won't get until later. If you have root access, you can often install and enable this feature before those who don't have root access. For example, when 'Live Wallpapers' first appeared as a feature, it was only available on the Nexus One handset. But rooted users of other phones soon got the feature working on their own devices. A similar example is that of WiFi tethering. This feature is sometimes disabled on certain Android phones, but a rooted user can get the feature working.

How to Specify a Telephone Extension in Android

1. Call the number and note how much time it takes for the phone system to ask you to dial an extension. This will vary depending on the business and phone message in question. You can use the phone's on-screen call timer. Hang up the call after you are finished.

3. Tap the contact whose number you want to add the extension to.

4. Press the 'Menu' key and touch 'Edit.'

5. Tap the 'Phone' field and add one comma after the number to provide a two-second delay. You can add as many commas as you need.

6. Type the extension number. For example, if you enter 2345678901,,,234 the phone will dial 234678901 and wait approximately six seconds. Then it will dial the remaining digits, 234.

7. Touch 'Save' to save the changes.

8. Call the number to verify the call goes to the correct extension. Tap the phone icon next to the contact name and listen on the line for the extra touch tones. If the phone does not wait long enough before dialing the extension number, go back and add more commas to the phone number. If the phone waits too long, reduce the number of commas.

The Best Ways to Upgrade My Android Phone's microSD Card

Upgrade Method

Many Android devices must be turned off before you can remove the microSD card, since the card is inaccessible without removing the battery. If you're unsure of the recommended approach for your device, check its documentation. If you can get to the microSD card without removing the battery, you can unmount the card and take it out. This approach works but is more complicated, so you might prefer to just turn the phone off because that will work with any Android device. If you do want to leave the phone on, press the 'Menu' button at the Home screen and select 'Settings,' then 'Storage' or 'Storage settings,' then 'Unmount SD card.' Removing a microSD card usually requires that you gently press it into the slot until you feel a click; then release the card, and it should partially eject, allowing you to pull it out the rest of the way. To put the new card in, just gently insert it until you feel it click into place.

Upgrade Options

You will find thousands of options for microSD cards if you search online. Dozens of companies manufacture them, and each one usually manufactures several types. Your best option is to buy one from a reputable company. Cards from companies Kingston, SanDisk, Transcend and Verbatim are normally good quality, and in the rare event that your card has a defect, a good company will usually replace it for you. Most electronic stores or stores with an electronics department will have many of these cards, or you can find them at various sites online such as Newegg.com and Amazon.com.

Capacity Options

You should check the documentation for your phone to see what capacity microSD card it can use. Most modern phones can use microSDHC cards, though often their documentation will simply say 'microSD.' Technically, a standard microSD card has a maximum capacity of two gigabytes. A standard microSDHC card has a maximum capacity of 32 gigabytes. These cards are physically identical, so while any phone with a microSD card slot can physically accept either type, only phones that support cards larger than 2GB can actually use microSDHC cards.

Backup Options

You have a couple of options for getting your content back when you put in a new microSD card. You can manually back up your content with a computer over a USB cord. This may take a while, and many users may find this difficult to do. Another option is to use an app that backs up your SD card's contents. A couple of options for this are the MyBackup Pro and App List Backup. You should look at the options for these apps and others to see what will best fit your needs. Other options include apps such as Double Twist for backing up your music and MyBackup Root for advanced users with rooted devices.
