Laptop Power

Dim the Screen

One of the biggest power drains for the laptop is lighting the screen. When you are using the laptop, lower the lighting level to conserve power. Different computers do this in different ways depending on who the manufacturer is, but most have a function key and increase and decrease brightness buttons. You can also shorten the time of idleness required before the screen turns off by editing the power options. A blank screen requires less energy than a lighted screen.

Turn Off Wireless Card

The wireless card in your laptop requires a large amount of power to search for and receive Internet signals. If you are not in an area that has a wireless signal or are not using the Internet, turn the wireless function of the computer off. You can do this by going to network settings and disabling the wireless adapter.

Use Standby and Hibernation

Standby mode turns off the monitor and hard drive and stores the open programs in the RAM memory. This reduces the amount of power needed and still allows you to resume whatever you were working on very quickly. You will want to save your work before going into standby mode because if power is lost, anything saved in the RAM memory will be lost as well. Hibernation saves all of the information to the hard drive and then turns off everything, conserving even more power than standby. The downside to hibernation is that it takes longer to resume than standby. To set your computer to go into either of these modes, either use the Start menu and select the mode you want to go into, or set your computer to enter one of these modes when you close the lid of your computer.

Limit CPU Usage

To conserve power, minimize the amount of programs and processes that are running on the computer. To maximize the battery life, do not run programs like DVD players or online games because these will drain the battery very quickly. You can also decrease the number of programs that are running by closing any programs in the task bar, located at the bottom right of the screen, that you are not using.

5. Continue adding and organizing your shortcuts on the Home screen until they're set up the way you want.

Sorting Shortcuts into Folders

6. Navigate to the location on the Home screen where you want to add a folder. Swipe your finger left or right on the screen to find the location you want to start.

7. Press the 'Menu' button on your Android device. This button's icon varies across different devices; it may simply say 'menu,' or it may have an icon of several horizontal lines or four squares.

8. Tap 'Add,' then 'Folders.' Tap the folder type you want. Most likely you'll want to use the 'New folder' option, though you may decide another pre-set option is better for you, like 'Facebook Phonebook' or Pandora's 'My Stations.' If you choose one of the pre-set folders, the folder will appear with its default contents and you'll have little or no further customization options available.

9. Press the 'Menu' button again and tap 'Add,' then 'Shortcuts.' From here, you can select from a list that includes apps, bookmarks, contacts and settings. You may have additional shortcuts available depending on the apps you've installed. The shortcut will appear on your Home screen.

ePSXe Guide

Plug-Ins and BIOS

To start using ePSXe, you need to download and install several plug-ins and the PlayStation BIOS; ePSXe requires one BIOS file, a video plug-in, a CDR plug-in and a sound plug-in. These files do not come with ePSXe, so you must locate them yourself. Look for the files on most emulator websites. Many websites offer all the required files in a single package. The ePSXe folder contains folders for the BIOS and for plug-ins. Once you locate the necessary files, extract each into the appropriate folder. If you do not do this, the plug-ins will not appear in the ePSXe setup menu.

Setting Up ePSXe

After installing the required plug-ins and BIOS, you must set up each plug-in before using ePSXe. To start setting up plug-ins, click on 'Config' at the top of the window and then click on the plug-in you want to configure. EPSXe lets you configure and customize the way the emulator handles audio, video and CD-ROM games. Most plug-ins are already configured, so all you need to do is select the desired plug-in to turn it on. You do not usually need to change the plug-in settings. One exception is the video plug-in; most video plug-ins let you choose between 'Fast' or 'Nice' performance. Select 'Fast' performance if you have an older or slow computer. Select 'Nice' performance for the highest-quality graphics and sound. EPSXe works with a keyboard or a game controller. Select 'Game Pad' from the Config menu to set up your controller or keyboard.

Playing Games

EPSXe allows you to load a game from CD-ROM, ISO or BIN file. Generally, it is faster to run a game from an ISO file because the computer does not have to read the data from a disc. To play a game from disc, insert the disc into your computer's CD-ROM drive and click 'Run CDROM.' If the game runs too slowly, consider ripping it to an ISO file. Use a free program, such as ImgBurn, to do this.If you downloaded an ISO game file, you usually need to extract it before use. Most ISOs come packaged in a RAR, ZIP or 7Z file. Use a program such as WinRAR or 7-Zip to extract them. EPSXe also supports the BIN file format, but this format is not as commonly used as ISO.When running a game, use the save states feature to save your progress at any time. Press 'F1' to save and 'F3' to load.

Problems and Solutions

If you experience video or audio problems with ePSXe, such as choppy frame rate or glitches, change your plug-in's settings. Using different plug-ins may also fix the problem. If your game runs too fast, you are most likely using the default or 'Fast' option of your video plug-in. Switch to the 'Nice' option to run the game at normal speed.Using save states can cause the game to freeze. If you use a save state and experience problems, load the game from an in-game memory card save instead. Cheat codes also sometimes cause freezing, so turn them off if necessary. For best results with ePSXe, ensure that you have the latest drivers for your computer's graphics card. Shut down all other programs while using ePSXe.

A Volleyball Player's Diet

Carbohydrates

For the volleyball player, carbohydrates are key to optimum performance. A high carb diet serves to supply the needed calories for both the anaerobic and aerobic energy needs of the player. Around 60 percent of the volleyball player's diet should come from carbohydrates such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereals, bread, pasta and rice.

Proteins

To provide additional energy and assist in muscle repair, about 15 to 20 percent of the volleyball athlete's diet should contain protein foods such as lean meats, turkey, chicken, fish, nonfat cheeses, dairy, egg whites and trail mixes.

Healthy Fats

To sustain weight at a competitive level, less than 30 percent of a volleyball player's diet should consist of foods containing healthy fats. Such foods include nut butters, fish oils, nuts, soy, avocados and salad dressings made of vegetable oil.

Fluid Intake

To supplement the diet as well as replenish fluids, volleyball players need to consume about two eight-ounce glasses of either a sports drink or water before a game or practice. During play, they should consume three eight-ounce glasses of water or a sports drink for every 15 minutes of play. After a game or practice, they need to consume, as they did before play, two eight-ounce glasses of water or a sports drink.

Nutrition on the Road

During away games, players need to stock the necessary foods to supply their energy requirements and maintain their electrolyte balance. Such foods include sports and breakfast bars, sports drinks, crackers, trail mixes, soups made with noodles or vegetables, cereals, fresh fruits and bagels.

Pre-Game Nutrition

Players should consume a meal prior to playing that is rich in carbohydrates, has a moderate amount of protein and is light in fat. Therefore, an example of a pre-game meal might include grilled chicken with pasta and salad or a lean piece of hamburger with salad and baked potato. For extra fuel, the player should drink a couple eight-ounce glasses of a sports drink or an eight-ounce glass of of water with half of an energy bar. Large meals (around 800 calories) should be consumed about four hours prior to play while smaller meals (around 600 calories) should be eaten about three hours before a game.

After-Game Nutrition

Just as important as the pre-game meal are the foods consumed after training or a game. That's because muscles can better replace carbohydrates in the muscles shortly after exercise. Therefore, consuming a meal containing foods with nutrient-dense carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, rice, pasta, potatoes, breads or even pizza is helpful in maintaining optimum nutrition. Include proteins, such as lean meat, chicken and cheese and some healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts, soy or fish oil as well.

How to Handle the Boss Trying to Date You

Dealing With the Boss

1. Educate yourself on workplace romances in your organization. Before you can figure out how you should handle your boss, you need to educate yourself on any policies in your employee handbook or company guidelines related to fraternizing in the workplace. Try to determine if it is accepted or frowned upon.

2. If fraternizing is not frowned upon in your working environment, determine if you want to date your boss. If you are entertaining this idea, proceed with caution. According to CNN Money, an online business resource, if you and the boss have a bad breakup, the tension between the two of you could infect the rest of the workplace.

3. Tell your boss that you do not feel comfortable dating at the office. If you have no interest in dating your boss, you can let him down easy by just explaining that you do not partake in workplace romances. This kind of response should be accepted because employees often have rules about dating someone they work for.

4. Do not use the crush to your advantage. You should never try gain benefit as a result of a boss having a crush on you. Refrain from asking for special favors or treatment, and do not falsely lead your boss on to get ahead in the workplace.

5. If your boss continues to try to date you, after you have explained that you do not date anyone you work for, you need to sternly tell your boss that you are not interested. Your job description does not include unwanted advances and flirting, so if the behavior continues, you need to refer back to your employee handbook to read the organization's written sexual harassment policy. If you are unable to find anything in the employee handbook or company guidelines, visit your human resources department to either disclose the problem you are having with your boss or to seek more information concerning sexual harassment in the workplace. To read about the different types of sexual harassment, see Resources.

Android: What Is Sticky Broadcast?

Broadcasts

Broadcasts are announcements sent to Android apps. When the battery gets low or the screen turns off, for example, an announcement goes out to all applications. Your phone's operating system initiates most broadcasts, but individual apps may do it too. If an app receives data that's available to other applications, it will contact and inform them. For the announcement to reach the apps, it has to go first to a broadcast receiver, an application component that handles the messages, usually without notifying users what it's doing.

Intents

Because of the separation the Android imposes between its various apps, one app cannot directly contact another app's broadcast receiver. Instead, the app notifies the Android phone with an Intent. An Intent is a message to either activate an app or activate one of its components, such as the receiver. The Intent simply defines the message that's about to be broadcast – that the battery is low, for example, or to request access to a photograph on your phone.

Sticky Broadcasts

A normal broadcast reaches the receiver it's intended for, then terminates. A sticky broadcast remains in existence so that it can notify other apps if they need the same information – for example, that the battery is now fully charged. When you register a new app that needs to know the information, or an inactive app turns on, the sticky broadcast will communicate with the receiver. A later sticky broadcast with new information on the same topic will rewrite an earlier sticky broadcast.

Considerations

An app can only send out a sticky broadcast or remove one if its programming includes a permission authorizing stickies. The security on sticky broadcasts isn't as tight as on non-sticky messages. One of the good things about using an intent, sticky or not, is that while you can specify which apps you want to receive it, you don't have to. Your Android determines the right apps to receive your broadcast, based on the filtering built into each app by its programmer.

How to Program Apps for the Android

1. Download and install the Eclipse Integrated Development Environment from the Eclipse Foundation website (see link in Resources). All of the official Android development tools and resources are aimed at developing in Eclipse, so this is the ideal environment to use.

2. Download and install the latest Java Development Kit from the Java section on the Oracle website (see link in Resources), following the installation instructions on the site.

3. Download and install the Android Software Development Kit into the Eclipse IDE. This resource contains the tools for developing Android apps. Visit the Android SDK download page on the official Android Developers Guide website (see link in Resources) and select the correct version for your operating system. In Eclipse, install the Android Developer Tools plugin by choosing 'Select' and 'Install New Software,' then entering the following location in the Add Repository dialog box:https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/Enter 'ADT Plugin' as the name and click 'OK' to install the tool.

4. Create a new project for each Android app you want to develop. Each time you create an Android project, you need to enter details of its application and package name, as well as which versions of the SDK you wish to target. You can create user-interface designs for your app user interfaces using the XML layout files within your projects. Create an Activity for each screen within your application, implementing your program logic in Java code.

5. Enter the application version details for your Android projects in their Manifest files. Here you can add an incremental version number and name each time you upgrade an app. You can test and run your Android apps on your own Android devices while you are developing them. Within Eclipse, you can also use the Android Virtual Device Manager to run your apps on devices with hardware and software specifications of your choice.

6. Sign your applications for release. To publish your apps on the Android Market, you need to sign them with a cryptographic key. You can use the Keytool utility to do this within Eclipse, using the ADT Export Wizard.

7. Sign up for a Developer Account (see Resources) to be allowed to release your apps through the Android Market. Log in and upload new and upgraded apps through your Developer Console.

My Auto

Verify Your Settings

First, ensure that your Android phone is set to auto-rotate when you change the orientation of your phone. Tap 'Settings' and then 'Display.' Verify that the 'Auto-rotate screen' option is checked. Next check the animation setting, as this setting can sometimes affect the auto-rotation of some websites and applications. Tap the 'Animation' drop-down arrow and select 'All animations.' If these options are set correctly, keep troubleshooting.

G-Sensor Calibration

Android phones need to be re-calibrated every so often to ensure that auto-rotate works correctly. Use the G-Sensor calibrate function for this. The G-Sensor is an accelerometer that measures the forces acting on it and allows for auto screen rotation and other device enhancements. To re-calibrate your Android phone, tap 'Settings' and then 'Display.' Tap 'G-Sensor calibration,' and place your phone on a flat, level surface like a table or counter top. Tap the 'Calibrate' button and wait for your phone to re-calibrate. Tap 'OK' when your screen reads 'Calibration complete.'

Memory Leak or Overload

Sometimes the auto-rotate function does not work if your phone is experiencing a memory leak or is running sluggishly. Close all unnecessary applications and Internet windows, and try to auto-rotate again. If that does not work, turn off your phone and turn it back on again to refresh the Android operating system. Removing and replacing the battery can also help.If the auto-rotate problem persists, clear your System Data cache. Tap 'Settings' and then 'Applications.' Tap 'Manage applications, and scroll down and select 'Market.' Tap the 'Clear cache' button. This should give your phone extra storage space and help its performance. Restart your phone after clearing the cache.

Your Phone's Case

If you use a phone case, take your phone out of its case and try the auto-rotate function. Some cases have magnets to keep them in place. These magnets can interfere with an Android phone's ability to auto-rotate. Purchase a replacement case without magnets, or remove the magnets and use Velcro dots instead to keep your case in place.

Factory Reboot

If you have tried all other options and the auto-rotate problem persists, you may need to take your phone to your wireless provider for a factory reboot, which will restore the phone's original settings and likely fix the auto-rotate problem. First back up all of your data, phone numbers and pictures either online or on your computer and synchronize your accounts--do not be afraid to ask a technician at the store for help--because all data is lost during a factory reboot.

Checklist for a Lab Audit

Chemical Storage

Chemicals must be stored in proper containers and separated accordingly. The audit checklist for chemical storage includes determining whether chemicals are stored away from sunlight or other heat, are labeled properly, are closed unless in use and are stored away from the floor. The laboratory audit checklist for chemicals should also note whether chemicals and food (if present) are stored separately. This portion of the checklist notes whether chemical storage containers are in good condition, if flammables are stored an appropriate distance from exits and if hazardous materials are stored in proper areas.

Facility Maintenance

The facility maintenance portion of the lab audit checklist notes whether entrances and exits are clearly marked and are free of obstruction. This part of the checklist may note whether a 'no food or drink' sign is posted. It notes whether a fire extinguisher is mounted and available and if emergency numbers are posted. Acknowledgment of a chemical plan is also revealed through the audit checklist.

Equipment

Laboratory equipment should maintain high performance standards to be used properly in the laboratory. The equipment portion of the checklist notes whether preventative maintenance on the checklist has been documented and whether service contracts are in place for major or heavy duty equipment. How to Tell If You Have a Keylogger Installed

1. Check the connection between your keyboard and your computer. Hardware keyloggers will generally be attached to the end of the cord on your computer. It will usually be a small cylindrically shaped device that is grayish in color. If you find such an attachment you can simply remove it and it will no longer be able to record.

2. Scan your computer with an anti-spyware software. You can use a software such as Spybot Search and Destroy (see link under References below). Although not 100 percent effective against keyloggers, it will get rid of most forms of spyware and malware. Simply go to spybot.com and download and install the software. As of 2009 it is free. Once it is installed you will need to do a scan, which will take approximately 30 minutes. Once finished, it will return a list of possible threats and ask you if you want to quarantine them. Click 'Yes' if you want to remove them.

3. Use antivirus software to find your keylogger. Go to avast.com and download the combination antivirus/anti-spyware software. If you are using it for personal use, then you can download the home version for free. Once you've downloaded it, install it and do a “Complete System Scan.” If you have a keylogger, it should show up in either the antivirus or anti-spyware scans. Again, this isn't 100 percent effective against keyloggers.

4. Use the Anti-Keylogger program (see References). This is designed specifically to detect and remove keyloggers and is the most effective tool, it should be able to remove all but the latest of keyloggers. After downloading and installing the program it will automatically start when you boot up your computer and will look for any keyloggers that are on your machine. If any are detected, it will ask you if you want to remove them. There is a free trial available, but as of December 2009 the full version costs $59.95 for a one-user license.

Android Development Intro

Applications

Android applications are software programs that can run on the Android operating system. Most Android-powered devices are purchased with a selection of basic apps already installed. Users can then download any number of additional apps. The Android Market divides applications into a number of categories, including games, reference, business, entertainment, communication, media, shopping and productivity among many others. Developers can therefore design applications for a wide variety of functions.

Development Process

The Android development process results in the production of an APK file, which is an Android Package File. An APK file represents the final exported version of an app, which users can access through the Market. To create a functioning APK file, developers use the Eclipse IDE (Integrated Development Environment) in conjunction with the Android SDK (Software Development Kit) and ADT (Android Developer Tools) plugin. These tools allow developers to code, compile, test and finally export Android apps. Developers can see their apps running on virtual devices using the AVD (Android Virtual Device) Manager.

Technologies

Android applications can involve multiple technologies, but in most cases they are mainly built using Java and XML coding. The XML for an application can model data and visual items such as user interface designs. Android developers use XML to define the layouts users see when they launch an application. The Java code for an Android app defines the logic and processing within it. Using Java classes, developers can define each application element with properties and behavior delivering the app's functionality. Developers who are learning Android but are not already familiar with the Java language often have to educate themselves about basic aspects of the technology, including objects and inheritance.

Releasing

When a developer finishes building and testing an Android application and is ready to release it through the Android Market, they need to go through a series of steps. The Android Market requires applications to be signed and versioned according to specific guidelines. Developers therefore need to secure their APK files using an encryption process, using the same key for each version of an app. The application manifest file allows developers to indicate versions with incrementing version numbers for each release. Developers can decide whether to charge a fee for their apps or whether to release them for free. Some developers release both free and paid versions of their apps, with the free versions sometimes supported by advertising.

What Is the Codebreaker Cheat Code for the Mew Event on Pokemon FireRed?

About Mew

Mew made its first appearance in the 1996 games 'Pokemon Red' and 'Pokemon Blue.' Developers intended to make Mew an unobtainable, secret Pokemon, but a coding glitch allowed players to uncover and capture it. Mew's strong psychic abilities let it learn any attack or ability, making it an ideal choice for a well-rounded, balanced team. Mew can also fly, teleport and transform into any other Pokemon type to confuse its enemies.

The Mew Codebreaker Code

Mew is normally unobtainable in 'Pokemon FireRed,' but a short Codebreaker code allows you to capture the creature. Insert the Codebreaker device into your Game Boy Advance. Open the 'Pokemon FireRed' code entry menu. Type '000014D1 000A' on the first line and '1003DAE6 0007' on the second. On the third line, enter '83007CEE 0097.' This code causes Mew to appear in the wild. If you want to set Mew's level, type '33007CF0 00XX' on the fourth line. Replace 'XX' with the desired level, from 01 to 99. Activate the cheat code and start the game.

Catching Mew

When the game loads, go to the Pokemon Store and buy at least 20 Pokemon balls. Ultra balls work best for catching fast-moving Pokemon like Mew. Transfer one of your Pokemon to the PC if you want to put Mew in your party right away. Head to a grassy area and walk around. With the cheat code active, any wild Pokemon you encounter turns into Mew. Attack Mew until its health bar turns red, and then throw Pokemon balls at it. Repeat this process if you want to catch more Mews. When you finish, save your game and turn off the Codebreaker to deactivate the cheat.

Obtaining Mew via 'Pokemon Emerald'

It is possible to capture Mew in 'Pokemon Emerald' if you have the Old Sea Map item from a Nintendo event. Show your Old Sea Map to the S.S. Tidal captain, and he offers to take you to Faraway Island. Mew makes you chase it around the island before it battles you. After you capture Mew, you can transfer it to 'Pokemon FireRed.' To do this, talk to Celio on the Sevii Islands in 'FireRed.' Complete the quest he gives you to enable trading between games.

How to Lose the Freshman 15 Pounds

1. Go to class. It is easy to sleep through your classes and only show up for mandatory exams. But getting the exercise from walking to class will help you burn those calories that you consume from late night study sessions.

2. Get some wheels. Although a car may be outside of the budget, a bike isn't nearly expensive. You can bike to class, around campus, even around town, burning off extra calories.

3. Take a fitness class. Look for an aerobics class, or get creative and try a class in fencing.

4. Look for a gym membership. While gym memberships can be costly, you may have access to a free membership in your student fitness center. Or you may be able to leverage your student status into a discounted membership at a local gym.

5. Go to the grocery store. Supplement your cereal, pizza and hot wings with fresh fruits and vegetables, and other healthy snacks that you may not find in your dining hall. Instead of picking up a donut before your 8 a.m. exam, run across campus with a granola bar in your hand.

6. Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Every time you have junk food, balance it with a salad, an apple or a V-8. Simply filling your tummy with more food that is good for you leaves less room for the food that made you gain the freshman 15.

Walther PPKS Field Cleaning Instructions

7. Dip your bore brush in cleaning fluid and scrub it through the barrel of the PPKS several times to dislodge any dirt or fouling.

8. Apply cleaning fluid to several cloth swatches and run them through the barrel of your pistol until they start coming out clean. Then pass several dry swatches through the barrel to remove any excess fluid.

9. Wipe off the excess fluid from the Walther PPKS with your clean cloth.

10. Apply gun oil to a clean cloth and lightly rub down all the metal parts of your Walther.

11. Apply gun oil to a cloth swatch and pass it through the barrel of the Walther.

How to Play Age of Empires 3

1. Play the game's tutorials. There are 2 of them, both of which will help you get ready to play Age of Empires 3 either competitively, or in the single-player campaign. If you are already familiar with the basics of Real-Time Strategy (or RTS) games, skip the first tutorial and go to 'Try a Game.' The principles and commands upon which Age of Empires 3 is built are common to nearly every other RTS game, so if you've played another Age of Empires, Warcraft, Starcraft, Dawn of War or any other RTS, you've already got the basics of unit movement, building construction and resource gathering.

2. Build Manor Houses to increase your unit cap. Age of Empires 3 allows you to construct a massive amount of units (200 total, including laborers.) Manor Houses are the structure used to increase the current number of units you can build.

3. Gather resources. There are 3 resources which must be collected in order to build more units, buildings and expand your colony. Food, wood and coins. Food is gathered from fishing, hunting or farming a Mill. Wood is gathered by cutting down trees and Coins are gathered from harvesting Silver Mines, working a Plantation or harvesting Whales. Set a bunch (10+) Settlers on gathering each type of resource and just let them go for it.

4. Train Skirmishers and Cannons as quickly as you can. Both of these units are the best there is in terms of military units. Training a lot of them quickly will ensure your military superiority. Skirmishers or Musketeers are essential for eliminating enemy units while artillery are essential for destroying enemy buildings quickly.

5. Construct Walls and Defense Towers to block the enemy from entering your territory. Walls may not be very strong, but they will force enemy Settlers to find alternate routes into your territory, or give your units time to eliminate them.

6. Remember to check back at your home city to receive resource shipments and use experience.

Edible Wild Plants Berries

Significance

Many wild berries and plants have contributed significantly to the culinary and health world. Many health food diets depend upon herbs, berries and nuts that are found in the wild, and even more have been discovered to have fantastic nutritional quality, such as acai or pomegranate, or dandelions and ginseng. Although modern farming techniques have altered many plants and created new hybrids of vegetables and fruits to grow, there are still basic plants and berries that you can survive off of in the wild for years. It is just important to know what the edible ones are, as there are many plants and berries that are poisonous.

Types of Edible Wild Plants

Edible wild trees and shrubs that grow nation-wide include: almond, white and Scotch pine trees, oak trees, sugar and red maple trees, American chestnut, acorns and hazelnut. In the Western part of the United States, additional plants and shrubs that grow include mountain mint, avalanche lily, alder, potato, agave, mesquite, amaranth, yucca, buckwheat and meadow thistle. In terrain such as meadows and fields, there are dandelions, chickweed, violets, pansies, thistle, plantain, pigweed, lamb's quarters, milkweed, meadow asparagus, wild carrot, burdock, artichoke, chicory, willow trees, wild onions, dayweed, goat's beard, wild clover, comfrey, garlic mustard and goldenrod. In the Eastern part of the United States, additional plants include birch trees, persimmon, Indian potato and cucumber, wild ginger and anise, morel mushroom, American ginseng, primrose, spring cress and witch hazel.

Types of Edible Wild Berries

Edible berries from shrubs and trees include; barberry, blackberry, blueberry, paw paw, wild plum, wild cherry, gooseberry, hawthorn, spicebush, salmon berry, wild strawberry, sumac, thimbleberry, wild cranberry, Juneberry, raspberry, salal, juniper berry, bearberry, mulberry, moonseed and wild grapes. Berries that grow in the west wild include rosaceae, and in the East mayapple and partridge berry. Many wild berries can be poisonous but still look like edible wild berries, so be sure to know the names and certain visible characteristics of any wild berries before consuming them.

Time Frame

Most of the berries and wild plants named above only grow in specific seasons within these regions. Many mushrooms and brush plants grow in the spring and fall, while berries are prevalent in the summer and fall. In fall, roots are readily available. Thick leaves and woodsy bramble plants grow best in the winter. The more rainfall there is, the more plentiful plants and brush. After ripening, berries usually are available to eat for almost two weeks while on the bush or tree. Nuts can last for months at a time. Plants and brush are available for months at a time, as re-growth occurs over the entire season, and sometimes over the entire year depending upon the plant.

Considerations

Do your own research to understand what wild plants and berries are okay and available for consumption. Many wild edible plants and berries are chock full of nutrients and vitamins, and can be lived off of for years, especially if you establish your own garden of certain wild species. On the other hand, there are plants and berries that look identical, but one is poisonous and the other nutritious. They may look like each other, such as unripe cherries and holly berries. Eating berries or plants that the body cannot process can do much damage to organs and digestive systems, even resulting in coma or death.

Netflix Video File Types

First Generation Video Format

Originally, Netflix used a Windows Media format for its Watch Instantly titles. Video was encoded using WMV3 at four different bitrates: 500, 1000, 1600 and 2400 kilobyes per second. Video is encoded at the 740x480 resolution, which is the same as a standard DVD.

Second Generation Netflix Format

Netflix has since adopted the VC1 codec for streaming video and uses Microsoft Silverlight to stream the files. Because the VC1 format is much more efficient, lower bitrates can be used. The Silverlight player can also seamlessly switch to a lower bitrate if a user would lose bandwidth. HD content in 720p is also available because of the VC1 format.

Future Changes

Currently, Netflix does not support 1080i HD streams citing that broadband connections are not fast enough to handle them at this point in time. Audio is also only presented in stereo due to troubles with finding an appropriate multichannel audio solution for streaming video. Netflix hopes to have streaming surround sound in a future upgrade.

Is Gmail on Android Push or Pull?

Push Email

A push email service sends new emails to the client as they arrive on the mail server. The client takes a essentially passive role in the transaction, only connecting with the email service when the server notifies it that it should do so. The server 'pushes' the email messages from the server to the client -- the Gmail app on the Android, in this case. The user can then open the email from within the client.

Pull Email

An email client that uses a pull email system, on the other hand, actively 'asks' the mail server for new messages at a specified interval. The server waits for a connection from the client; if there are any new email messages on the server when the client connects, it transfers them to the client. Most desktop computer email clients use the Post Office Protocol, or POP3, to pull emails from the mail server.

Advantages of Push Email

Push email has several distinct advantages, especially on a mobile device like the Android. The Gmail app on the Android only connects to the server when the user receives new email messages; this helps to preserve the mobile device's battery power, as the Gmail app doesn't connect to the server when the inbox is empty. For the same reason, using a push email system prevents the device from unnecessarily using mobile network bandwidth to check an empty mail server inbox.

Forcing Push

Due to network connectivity or other issues, the Gmail server may occasionally fail to instantaneously push a new message to your Android mobile device. If this occurs, you can force the server to push the new message to your phone from within the Gmail app. Launch the Gmail app and press the 'Menu' button on your Android to open the app's settings. Tap the 'Refresh' icon to force the server to push any new emails to your Android.

Easiest Ways to Root an Android

Reasons

Many reasons exist for wanting to root an Android phone. In addition to full control over the operating system, you can install applications that require root access, perform system tweaks to make your phone operate more efficiently, put applications on your SD card instead of your phone's internal memory and update your operating system to the latest version without waiting for your wireless carrier to make an update available.

SuperOneClick

SuperOneClick, as the name implies, is an Android application that only requires one click to root your phone. You do need a small amount of preparation on the phone before you can run SuperOneClick. The phone's debugging mode needs to be turned on and the Android software development kit has to be installed. After these requirements are met, SuperOneClick only needs a click of the Root button to open up your smartphone. If you change your mind about rooting your phone, SuperOneClick provides an unrooting button that returns your Android phone to its original configuration.

Universal Androot

Universal Androot offers an even easier method for rooting your phone, as you do not need to install the software development kit for it to work. Instead you install the Androot APK file on your system from the SD card to add the application to your phone. You do need an Android phone that is capable of installing applications outside of the marketplace before rooting, however. Once Universal Androot is installed and launched, you follow the application's commands to root your phone.

Considerations

If you do not have experience with the Android operating system, you may run into problems with a rooted Android. You may end up installing infected applications that put a virus on your phone, altering a system setting that causes performance issues or voiding your warranty. If you want to revert your Android phone back to factory settings, you need to find the stock ROM for your specific phone model and flash it back to the original settings. Not all Android phones are compatible with popular rooting applications. You may need to try several applications before finding one that works properly with your specific smartphone model.
