The Best Software Apps for the Motorola Backflip

Google Maps

The Backflip has built-in GPS support with assisted GPS functionality. It also has a built-in compass and a 3.1-inch full-color screen. If you’re a traveler or someone who likes to know exactly where you’re going, these features make the Backflip ideal for use with the Google Maps application. Google Maps is a free app that includes access to Google’s voice-guided GPS navigation system, details and reviews on local points of interest, and the ability to check in with friends via Google’s Latitude utility. Google Maps requires Android 1.6 or later, which means it’s fully compatible with the Motorola Backflip if you upgrade the phone’s operating system to Android 2.1.

VLC Direct Pro

The Backflip comes with built-in multimedia support for MP3, eAAC+, WAV, WMA9, MP4, H.263, H.264 and WMV9 files. Installing VLC Direct Pro lets you expand the Backflip's multimedia capabilities by adding the ability to stream any audio and video files directly from your computer. VLC Direct Pro works like a remote jukebox. A list of audio and video files on your computer show up on the phone’s screen. Simply click what you’d like to watch or listen to, and the app does the rest. VLC Direct Pro is 698 KB in size, costs about $4 at the date of publication and requires Android 2.0 or later.

Shazam

In addition to cellular network access, the Backflip has built-in Wi-Fi capabilities. It also has an onboard microphone. Shazam makes use of these tools to let you identify songs. Say you’re in your car and a song comes on the radio that you like but don’t know the title. Turn on Shazam and hold your Backflip up to your car’s speakers. The app captures a sample of the song using the phone's microphone. It then accesses the Shazam database over your Backflip's cellular connection and tells you the name of the song and the artist who sings it. The app can also access the database over a Wi-Fi connection. Shazam is a free application that’s 1.6 MB in size and requires Android 1.6 or later.

'Bunny Shooter Free Game'

If you’re looking to have some fun with the Backflip, you can make use of the phone's touch-sensitive screen and download games such as 'Bunny Shooter Free Game.' One of the most-downloaded titles from Android Market, the game combines the principles of physics with fun animations to create a strategy game. 'Bunny Shooter Free Game' is free to download, 8.8 MB in size and requires Android 2.1 or later. Other popular games, such as 'Angry Birds' and 'Ant Smasher,' are also compatible with the Backflip, provided you upgrade the phone’s operating system to Android 2.1.

What Is an SDK File?

Overview and Purpose

SDK files are created and distributed by a wide variety of companies for developers who want to build their own compatible applications. The file gives you the necessary tools like code and documentation to help you customize applications for software, hardware and operating systems. Some SDK files are free, while others require payment, and some are more open in terms of what they allow you to access. You may use SDK files for different purposes. You may need to create an application for your organization's technical needs, but you may also develop applications for your personal use or to make money. For example, Apple, Android and BlackBerry provide SDK files to developers to create smartphone apps to sell to customers.

Installation

A SDK file is made available over the Web through the company that originally created it. Before downloading and installing the file, check the list of requirements. SDK files vary and may run on Windows, Macintosh, Linux-based machines or all three. You'll also need an integrated development environment, or IDE, on your computer. An IDE is an additional software application to help you program your application. An IDE can be based on a single programming language like Java or it may support multiple languages.

Components

When you download and install an SDK file, you receive different tools to help you with your application build. You may find sample applications to get you started as well as code, drivers, libraries, graphics and graphics converters, documentation and more. Within the documentation you may find tutorials, frequently asked questions and other resources. Some SDK files like those from Android and Apple offer emulators or simulators so you can test your application in a virtual environment.

Examples

SDK files are available for technologies ranging from Microsoft's Kinect to Barnes & Noble's Nook to Cisco's telephones. Google makes SDK files for multiple programming languages to help you build and run custom Web applications. Nikon has SDK files for its cameras and other imaging products, while Intuit provides files for its QuickBooks software. SDK files are also produced by other companies without ties to a particular product that can help you develop applications using specific programming languages.

My Android Tablet Does Not Charge

USB Connections

All tablets connect to your computer using a USB cable. Once connected, the device should charge – as long as the computer recognizes it. Look for manufacturer-specific software to launch once you plug your tablet into your computer; if this software fails to launch, it's likely that your computer hasn't detected the device and won't charge it. Try a second USB cable, if available, or plug the USB cable into a different port. If the device doesn't charge in either port, replace the USB cable.

AC Adapters

Some tablets are sold with an accompanying AC power adapter, though these accessories are often optional. Try plugging your tablet into its AC power connector in the event that its USB cable isn't functioning. Also check different wall outlets in case the outlet you are plugging your tablet into is defective. If the device fails to charge in different outlets, the AC adapter may be faulty.

Reboot

Like any device with an operating system – a computer, a mobile phone or an MP3 player – tablet computers can freeze from time to time. When a computer freezes, you can reboot or restart it to get the operating system working properly again. This is true of tablets too, but rebooting these systems can be a little tricky. Check the manufacturer's website for specific instructions to restart your system. Putting the tablet to sleep and waking it up doesn't clear its memory – look instead for the buttons for a 'reset,' which are different for every brand. This may clear up any recent malfunctions, like freezing apps or charging issues.

Restore

Just like a computer, tablets sometimes need to be restored to their original state to overcome technical issues like charging problems. Again, the process of restoring your tablet to its factory default differs from model to model and from brand to brand. Check the manual or the manufacturer's website for specific instructions, but as a general rule: plug the tablet into your computer using the provided USB cable. Wait for the appropriate software to load and then look for a 'Restore' option. Follow the onscreen prompts to restore the device.

Can You FaceTime an Android Phone?

Background

FaceTime is an Apple product, designed for use with the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Mac. The FaceTime application is not compatible with non-Apple devices, including those using Google's Android operating system. FaceTime gets its name by giving Apple users the means to engage in video calls using the front-facing camera on the iPhone 4 and other devices, allowing both parties the ability to view each other's face while talking.

FaceTime Features

FaceTime is integrated into the iPhone 4 and requires no additional downloads. You can tap the FaceTime button during a normal phone call to invite the other person to a video chat, or call another Apple user from the FaceTime application itself. You can switch between the front and rear cameras to show your face or give someone a glimpse of your surroundings. The application requires Wi-Fi to function, and as of July 2011, does not work over 3G networks.

Third-party Applications

Third-party video calling applications are available in the Apple App Store and the Android Market. Applications like Skype, Tango and Fring allow you to make video calls from an iPhone to an Android smartphone and vice versa. In addition to Wi-Fi, these applications also support video calling over cellular networks. Fring also supports a group-calling feature, allowing four people to be on the same video call at once.

Cost

FaceTime video calls are free for Apple users. Skype, Tango and Fring offer free video calling between Android and Apple devices. Rates may apply when calling regular or landline phones. Check with the developer of the specific application regarding unique features and possible charges. Using free video calling applications does not use minutes from your monthly cellular plan, but they do use data. Know the limitations of your data plan to avoid any additional costs.

How to Treat an Allergic Reaction

1. Take an oral antihistamine to treat nasal allergies, skin inflammation or itchy and watery eyes, which are commonly caused by animal dander, flowers or grass. Buy non-drowsy antihistamines so that you can stay alert during the day.

2. Try an anti-inflammatory hydrocortisone cream to relieve skin itching or redness from a reaction, such as from clothing. You can also use wet cloths or an ice pack to help heal the skin irritation. Wrap a bag of frozen vegetables in a towel if ice is unavailable.

3. See an allergy specialist for a prescription antihistamine if the over-the-counter formulas don't help. Cetirizine can be taken indefinitely to relieve reactions to dust, pollen, mold or pet dander. Use a prescription decongestant if you're having problems with a runny nose or sinuses due to pollen in the air and over the counter drugs don't work.

4. Use a prescription nasal corticosteroid spray if the antihistamines don't cure your allergic reactions. You can use this spray daily without worrying about side effects of taking steroids by mouth.

5. Check into immunotherapy, or allergy shots, if you have frequent allergic reactions. These shots are antigens that are given in stages, depending on the patient's needs. The intent is to alter the immune system's response to prevent future reactions. In other words, the body becomes 'desensitized' to the allergen.

6. Get to the emergency room if you experience sudden, severe hives, swelling, stomach pain, vomiting or difficulty breathing. These reactions are commonly caused by eating or drinking foods such as peanuts, milk, eggs or seafood. The hives and the swelling can also come from insect stings. You will be evaluated and treated with an IV if it's determined that you need medication immediately.

How to Improve My Android Device Performance

Identifying Performance Problems

1. Determine when your device is slowing down. Is it sluggish only when you’re Web browsing, or when you’re reading email or using a specific application? Is the battery draining faster at home than it does at work? The timing of your performance issues is a great indicator of where the problem lies.

2. Open the Manage Applications tool to look for for applications that might be eating up your processing power while they’re in the background. If a specific app is using a significant percentage of your resources, you may want to kill it, remove it or look for an update. To open the Manage Applications tool, press the Menu button, tap “Settings,” tap “Applications” and tap “Manage Applications.” Tap “Running” to see the currently running apps, along with the amount of time they’ve been running as well as the number of services and amount of memory they’re using.

3. Check for battery drains using Android’s Battery Use monitor, which logs the power consumption of your device’s apps and services. To open Battery Use, tap “About Phone” or 'About Device' in your system settings, and tap “Battery Use.”

Optimizing Android Performance

4. Remove apps you don’t use, and move the ones you do to your SD card to reduce their memory load. To move or remove an app, open the Manage Applications tool and tap the app you want to manage. To move the app, tap “Move to SD Card” or “Move to USB Card,” and to delete the app, tap “Uninstall.” You may also kill running apps to free resources, but you should take care to kill only optional apps and not important services. If you find you’re frequently killing a particular app, consider reinstalling it or removing it altogether.

5. Minimize unnecessary pings, syncs and updates in your applications. If you’re running social media apps like Tweetdeck, news-and-weather widgets or even Android’s email app, you can reduce memory and battery load by decreasing the frequency with which they check for new information. For the best power savings, set your apps to update manually.

6. Use only the widgets you need, and reduce or eliminate resource-tapping animations in wallpapers and menus. To remove unnecessary home-screen widgets, press and hold the widget to select it, and drag it to the Trash. To turn animated menus into static menus, open your Settings, tap “Display,” tap “Animations” and tap “No Animations.”

7. Set Flash to run only when necessary in your Web browser. Disabling Flash until you need it may speed up your browsing considerably. To find the Flash settings, tap the Menu icon in your Android browser, tap “More,” tap “Settings” and tap “Enable Plug-Ins.” Change the setting from “Always On” to “On Demand.” To view a Web page's Flash content on demand, tap the content you want to see. If you use a third-party browser such as Opera, Dolphin or Skyfire, consult the browser's documentation for help disabling Flash. Firefox for Android does not support Flash as of March 2012.

8. Disable Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi when you don’t need them. When you’re not using these features, they continue to use power to search for a connection. Android’s Power Control widget lets you quickly enable or disable these functions. The one exception to this rule occurs when you have a constant Wi-Fi connection throughout the day. In this situation, setting your Wi-Fi to never sleep will prevent your phone or tablet from using its cellular radios to sync when the screen sleeps, saving power.

9. Turn down your screen’s brightness and optimize timeouts to conserve battery power. The screen is the largest battery draw on your Android device, so these changes can make a considerable difference. To change brightness, use the Power Control widget or go to your device’s Settings, tap “Display” and tap “Brightness.” If you check “Automatic Brightness,” the device will use its ambient light sensor to adjust the screen’s brightness, but reducing the brightness manually will save more energy. To change the screen timeout setting, tap “Screen Timeout” in the “Display” settings.

3. Browse websites of online companies that provide unlock codes for your model phone and compare prices. Online companies such as Cell Corner, Cellular Locksmith, Unlock to Talk and others usually offer lower unlock code prices than cellular phone service providers. Therefore, choose the vendor with the lowest price for the unlock code.

4. Buy the unlock code online or call the company and make your purchase over the phone. Wait for the service to provide you with the unlock code via email or over the phone, then write down the code sequence. Some unlock codes consist of only numbers, while others are a series of numbers and other characters.

5. Turn off the cell phone, then remove the battery. Locate the SIM memory card in the phone and remove it. Insert the SIM card from the new service provider, reinstall the battery and turn the phone on again.

6. Wait for the phone to prompt you for an authorization code to change networks, then enter the unlock code on the keypad and press the 'OK' key. Wait for a 'Restriction Off' or similar message. The phone is now usable with the new service provider's network.

How to Change a Fuel Filter

1. Put on your protective glasses and gather your tools. An assortment of wrenches and screwdrivers are necessary. The ones you use will depend upon the vehicle.

2. Elevate the vehicle. This can be done by using a jack and jack stands, or drive-up ramps. Do not rely solely on a single jack, as this is very dangerous.

3. Find the fuel filter. The location varies from vehicle to vehicle. It's a safe bet to start your search near the fuel tank under the body. You can also reference your owner's manual or call your local dealership.

4. Remove the protective covering that guards the fuel filter. Most filters have some kind of plastic covering over them to prevent damage, and can be removed by a common wrench, hex wrench, or screwdriver.

5. Remove the fuel lines attached to the fuel filter. There are a number of ways these hoses might be linked to the pump, such as links, brackets or clips. Use either a screwdriver or wrench, whichever the attachments require.

6. Cap the fuel lines with a pencil or golf tee, and keep them tilted toward the drainage canister.

7. Remove the fuel filter from the assembly, noting which way it was oriented. An arrow will likely be on the filter. It should be pointed toward the engine, and away from the fuel tank.

8. Install you new fuel filter. Be sure that it is oriented so the fuel arrow points toward the engine.

How to Remove Gold From Computer Chips

Preparation

1. Consider purchasing a special set of equipment and supplies specifically designed for do-it-yourself gold recovery from computer scrap. Ask questions from professionals about the equipment and supplies.

2. Purchase a basic gold recovery unit with non-toxic chemical processes for ceramic computer chip gold recovery. This costs between $500 and $600, as of 2010. Consider purchasing additional supplies or materials when ordering the gold recovery kit. Purchase a digital scale, sold online for about $20.

3. Search for scrap computer chips. Often, people throw out or donate old and used computers and components for free. Scrap computer chips and parts can also be purchased online. Locate central processing units for scrap. Don't bother with the monitors, which contain different, potentially toxic chemicals that are not recommended for scrap metal recycling.

4. Create a special work area for disassembling and removing computer chips and other possible scrap metals from computer components. Make a special space in the work area for your gold recovery unit.

Process

5. Watch the instructional video that comes with your gold recovery unit. Call the manufacturer with any questions that you may have prior to setting up the equipment for use.

6. Combine non-toxic salts with the water-based solution in the gold recovery unit, as instructed. Add the computer chips to the solution.

7. Soak the chips in the solution for the amount of time as directed by the instructional video. Remove the gold from the solution. Use tin foil, if desired, to capture and recover other residual precious metals.

8. After you have recovered a sufficient amount of gold from the scrap computer chips and components, contact a scrap metals jewelry store or refinery to sell your gold to. Ask questions about how payment works, and about any minimum amount of gold that you may need to include to get the best refining price possible.

9. Use a digital scale to weigh the amount of gold and other precious metals that you recover from scrap. Keep accurate track of the weights in ounces, troy ounces, grams and penny weights. Make sure you get paid an accurate amount for your precious metals by weight.

Motorola Backflip Hacks

USB Charging

You can charge the Motorola Backflip’s battery through a standard AC wall outlet or via a USB cable connection to a personal computer. The flow of energy through these types of connections differs and produces different battery-charging times. You can produce a nearly instantaneous charge using a car adapter by cracking open the USB end of the wire and soldering the D+ and D- data pins -- located on the USB connector’s circuit board -- together. Plug the phone to your car’s cigarette lighter with the modified wiring and your phone should fully charge in a manner of seconds.

Applications

The Motorola Backflip contains the Android 1.5 operating system and is programmed to only accept applications from the Android Market website. You can get around this restriction by installing the Motorola ADB 32-bit and ADB 64-bit drivers -- both available from the Motorola website -- onto the phone. Next, install the Software Development Kit application, which you can obtain from the Android development website. Activate the phone’s debugging settings by entering the “Settings” folder from the device’s home screen, choosing “Applications,” and then “Development.” From the next screen, check the “USB Debugging” option. Connect the phone to your computer and access the computer’s command prompt screen and then navigate to the ADB menu, which is located in the tools folder of the SDK directory. From the Windows command utility, enter “cmd: adb install application.apk.” Replace the “application” portion of this command with the actual name of the program you want to install. You must have your APK file in the same directory as the ADB menu for this hack to work as it should.

Unlocking

Although the Motorola Backflip was intended for use with AT&T’s wireless network, you can use the phone on any Global System for Mobile Communication, better known as GSM, carrier’s network. For instance, if you want to switch from AT&T to T-Mobile, purchase an unlock code from AT&T. Provide this code to T-Mobile to lift the device’s network restriction and to gain access the carrier’s network. Your Backflip should be fully functional with its new carrier and should not experience a loss of any of its features.

Flashing

Depending on the GSM carrier to which you switch the Backflip, you might need to install additional drivers to make the phone fully functional on another GSM carrier’s network. Your new carrier will inform you if you need to install additional software. If you do need to, you will be directed to the carrier’s website where you can download the required drivers. Typically, these drivers are best downloaded to a personal computer and then transferred to the Backflip.

Alternatives to the iPhone Passcode Lock

AndroidLock

AndroidLock brings the pattern lock screen of Android devices to your iPhone. Instead of entering the numeric passcode, you create a pattern based on a grid of dots. To unlock your phone, you must enter the correct pattern with your finger. Entering the correct pattern will show the full pattern and then unlock your iPhone so you can make calls or access apps. If you have jailbroken your iPhone and are using the Cydia package installer, you can download AndroidLock from Cydia's repositories.

RecognizeMe

Rather than entering a passcode or even using gestures, you can use the front-facing camera on your iPhone to perform a facial scan and act as a biometric lock on your iPhone. This modification is also available in Cydia, for jailbroken iPhones.

LockGestures

LockGestures not only allows you to unlock your jailbroken iPhone with gestures but offers advanced functions. You can specify specific gestures to open apps on your iPhone from the lockscreen. This modification, which is available through Cydia, uses multitouch gestures to complete nine different actions, including adjusting your iPhone's screen brightness and playing the next song on your playlist. This tweak is available for free.

Move LockScreen

Move LockScreen is a clever lockscreen alternative that requires neither a password nor a pre-assigned gesture. Rather, you simply press and hold a corner of your lock screen and move the screen itself. This locking mechanism is simple to use, even in the dark or when you are tired. However, its use is not obvious so it deters others from accessing your iPhone. You can download Move LockScreen through Cydia.

How to Find What a Private Number on Caller ID Is

1. Pick up the phone. You can usually call a private number back if you pick up the phone before anyone else calls you. Dial *69 on your phone's keypad. In most states, this number lets you call back a private number. Politely ask for the caller, and that person's reason for calling. (Please note that this method is best used when you have no reason to suspect it is a nuisance-caller. Many experts suggest this method can be counter-productive if you are receiving nuisance calls.)

2. Contact your phone company. Ask the representative if he or she can trace a private number. Depending on your phone company, you may have to pay a fee for this service. Your phone company may also ask if you want to sign up for anonymous call blocking or a 'privacy manager' feature. Anonymous call blocking directs all blocked numbers to your phone's answering machine. 'Privacy manager' features, on the other hand, will generally require the caller to enter a phone number before connecting to you. If you recognize the number, you can decide whether to accept the call or not.

3. Look at your phone's caller I.D. screen. If it shows a name but no number, you can search the person on a phone look-up website (see Resources). However, you may get many results, especially if the name is common.

4. Contact the police department if you receive threatening or harassing calls from a private number. They should be able to find out whom the caller is. First, you may have to fill out a police report including details such as the time and date of the calls, and what the caller said.

Android File Transfer Over Wi

WiFi File Transfer

WiFi File Transfer turns your Android device into a local file server on your wireless network. After enabling WiFi File Transfer on your phone, you can connect to your phone via a web browser on any computer that is on the same WiFi network. Once connected, you can browse through the files stored on your phone and upload new files to the phone. You can set an optional password in the app on your phone to prevent unauthorized computers from connecting to your device. At the time of writing, WiFi File Transfer is available in a free version with a 4-megabyte limit on files uploaded to your phone over the network, and a $1.40 version with no limits on file sizes.

Wireless File Transfer Pro

Like WiFi File Transfer, Wireless File Transfer Pro allows you to connect to your phone via a local computer's web browser. Wireless File Transfer Pro also includes a local file manager that allows you to browse and edit the files stored on your phone from within the app. Wireless File Transfer Pro supports wireless application installation so you can download an '.apk' file to your computer and install it to your phone over a WiFi network. At the time of writing, Wireless File Transfer Pro is available for free on the Android Market.

File Expert is a file browsing application with powerful WiFi capabilities. File Expert allows local computers to connect to your phone via their web browsers, but it also allows your phone to connect to shared resources on local computers. Additionally, File Expert can transfer files between two phones over a WiFi connection, even if there is no established WiFi network present. The only condition is that both phones must have File Expert installed. At the time of writing, File Expert is available for free on the Android Market.

Android Sync Manager

Android Sync Manager WiFi takes a different approach to file transfers. It is a two-part system, with one program installed on your Android device and another installed on your computer. When the devices are connected to the same WiFi network at scheduled intervals, the software automatically synchronizes files, contacts, messages and other information between your computer and your device. Android Sync Manager is available from the Android Market for free at the time of writing.

2. Begin shooting scenes for your horror movie. Use the storyboard video that you created in step 1 as a guide. As you shoot your footage, visualize what the completed horror movie will look like. If you're working with a very low budget, avoid using elements such as extreme gore and creature suits or masks. Instead, use subtle costumes and makeup. Shoot scenes with a considerable amount of light and dark contrast and long moments of silence and inaction. This will help to build suspense in the finished horror movie.

3. Transfer the horror movie footage to your computer. Open Windows Movie Maker and click 'Capture from Video Device.' Click 'Next.' Give the video segment a title and choose which folder to save it in. Click 'Next.' Select 'Best quality for playback on my computer.' Click 'Next' again. Click 'Start Capture' to begin recording. Click 'Stop Capture' and 'Finish' when you're done.

4. Click and drag the horror movie clips from the collections window into the storyboard. Click 'Show Timeline.' Select 'Video' from the 'Clip' menu to make several segments from one video clip. Edit your video by rearranging the video clips or clicking and dragging the lines at the right and left of the clips.

5. Click 'Show Storyboard.' Click 'View video effects.' Click and drag the video effects you'd like to use to the video segments you want. Certain effects, such as 'Greyscale,' 'Fade Out to Black,' 'Threshold,' 'Slow Down, Half' and 'Film Grain' can be used to create a horrifying effect.

6. Click 'View video transitions.' Click and drag the transitions to the boxes between the video clips in the storyboard. Avoid cheesy transitions such as 'Fan,' 'Diamond' and 'Shatter.' Instead, favor subtle effects such as 'Fade,' 'Dissolve' and 'Wipe.'

7. Choose the scariest, most suspenseful music you can find. Click 'Show Timeline' in Windows Movie Maker. Click 'Import audio or music,' select the music file and click 'Import.' Click and drag the music file from the collections window to the 'Audio/Music' track. Click and drag the edges of the file to the right or left to change the duration of the music.

8. Create or find sound effects for your horror movie. Import them into Windows Movie Maker. Click and drag them from the collections window to the 'Audio/Music' track. If you would like to have both music and sound effects at the same time in your horror movie, you must edit them together using a separate program, then import the entire audio track into collections.

9. Select 'Save Movie File...' from the 'File' menu. Select 'My Computer.' Click 'Next.' Give your horror movie a name and click 'Next' again. Choose 'Best quality for playback on my computer' and click 'Next' to begin saving the movie to your hard drive.
