How to Get Swype APK

1. Use MediaFire, a file-hosting site, to locate the Swype APK. You do not need an account to download from MediaFire, but you'll need a direct link from the user who uploaded the APK. These links are not easy to find but can sometimes be found in forum postings or on blogs. MediaFire does not allow you to search for these files directly. Search for 'Swype APK MediaFire' in Google if you cannot find a functional link.

2. Search through Filestube.com to locate the Swype APK. Filestube.com indexes well-known hosting sites such as Megaupload, Hotfile, Rapidshare and MediaFire. This is a way to see the files hosted on these sites without digging through a search engine. Scroll through the results and compare the version numbers to find the most recent version. Click 'Download' and Filestube.com will direct you to the proper links. Larger files will be broken into multiple downloads that you must 'zip' back together using a program such as WinRAR or 7-Zip.

3. Download the APK using your smartphone's Web browser. Access the Web by clicking the blue 'globe' icon or type your search into the Google bar at the top of the screen. Download Swype APK as you would any file and it will save in the 'Download' folder on your SD card. Obtain a file manager from the Market, such as Astro File Manager or ES File Explorer, to install the file.

How to Use a Laptop As an Automotive Scan Tool

1. Purchase a laptop OBD-II interface kit. You can purchase these kits at many automotive parts stores; in addition, they are available online.

2. Insert the software installation disc. Follow the prompts to complete the installation. If the installation does not automatically begin, access 'My Computer' and double-click on the disc to start.

3. Connect the components to your laptop. Most kits contain a USB to serial adapter for laptops without serial ports. Once the device is attached to the laptop, connect the OBD-II diagnostic port cable.

4. Start the software program. Double-click on the desktop icon if the program did not automatically start. Get comfortable with the control interface.

5. Bring your laptop to your vehicle. Turn the ignition key to the 'On' position, but do not crank the engine. Connect the OBD-II scan cable from the laptop to the diagnostic port on your vehicle (usually located in the driver's side foot well, below the steering well).

6. Click the 'Scan' button on the control interface, if required. View the engine codes and diagnostic information provided by the program.

How to Improve the Pandigital Novel

1. Upload books from an external SD card onto your Pandigital Novel. To do this, insert your SD card into the card slot, located on the side of your reader. Tap “My Library” from the home screen. Your media will automatically import from the card to your device's internal memory.

2. Update your firmware to gain access to “Android Market.” Android Market allows you to install thousands of free and paid software applications onto your eReader. The link to update your firmware is included in the “Downloads” section of the Pandigital website. Android Market can not be added to Pandigital Novel 6 or Pandigital Novel 9.

3. Install a “Text-To-Speech Engine” onto your Pandigital Novel. A text-to-speech engine plays the text of your eBooks as audio. A text-to-speech engine can only be added from the Android Market. A few of the Android Market text-to-speech applications include SVOX, eSpeak, iVona and Text To Speech.

4. Add a protective case to your Pandigital Novel. The protective case won't improve functionality, only durability. There are different types of cases, including gel cases and portfolio cases. Cases are available via the Pandigital website or through a Pandigital authorized retailer.

5. Improve the response of your touch screen, if you notice a lag in response time. To do this, tap “Settings” from your device's home screen. Touch “Calibrate” to calibrate your device.

How to Trace Anonymous Phone Numbers

1. Let the call go to voice mail. A simple way to discover the identity of an anonymous call is to not answer the call, let it 'roll over' to your voice mail, and then listen to it at your convenience. Most callers identity themselves, their phone numbers and the purpose of their calls in voice messages.

2. Redial the call. Most landline phones have 'Redial' buttons, and most cell phones either have a 'Redial' button or a redial feature (contact the manufacturer, whose number is on the main page of their website, to inquire about redial features). The anonymous call must be the last incoming call for you to use redial. If the caller answers, politely explain you received an anonymous call from that number and would like to know who called. If you get a message, the caller may have identified himself and/or his phone number in it.

3. Press *69. In North America, most phone carriers provide this service for a minimal charge (contact your landline carrier or cell phone provider to inquire if they offer this code). Press *69 to automatically redial the last incoming call to your phone. If the caller answers, politely explain you received an anonymous call from that number and would like to know who called. If you get a message, the caller may have identified herself and/or her phone number in it.

4. Request Anonymous Call Rejection. Most landline telephone carriers provide an 'Anonymous Call Rejection' service for a monthly fee that automatically rejects blocked phone numbers. Callers hear a recording that the subscriber (you) does not accept blocked calls, and if the caller wishes to complete the call, he must unblock his caller ID. Contact your telephone carrier or cell phone provider (whose phone numbers are on your monthly statements) to ask if they provide this service.

5. Purchase an unmasking service. TrapCall is a service that unmasks (unblocks) anonymous calls, and displays the caller's name and/or phone number on your caller ID. For a free trial, go to Trapcall.com, press the 'Try Trapcall free!' button in the lower right of the web page, and follow the instructions.

6. Purchase an anonymous call blocking device. There are products, such as Call Silencer, that automatically screens anonymous calls. Although Call Screener doesn't unmask caller IDs, it forces anonymous callers to unblock their phone numbers if they wish their calls to ring through to your number.

7. Press *57. Most phone carriers in North America offer this fee-based call trace service to track anonymous, harassing calls. When you press *57 immediately following a harassing call, the phone company records the caller's phone number (however, this number is not forwarded to you). Instead, the phone company asks you to sign an authorization form before they give this number to law enforcement for further investigation.

Can I Put an APK File on a NOOK Color?

APK Files

APK files are programs and applications for use with the Android operating system. These are package files based on the ZIP format, containing all of the data and assets that the program uses, with the exception of external files such as icons if the program is designed to use external assets. Installing an Android app requires you to place the APK file in the appropriate system directory for the device's operating system to recognize it; additional installation is not required.

Android SDK

Though many users of Android devices use the Android Market application to install new apps, you can also use the Android Software Development Kit, or SDK, to install programs and applications for which you have the APK file for. Use Android SDK's ADB loader to install and uninstall APK files, though you also need root access to the device in order to install an ADB client on the device. You need a wired Internet connection to the computer where the Android SDK is required for installing apps from APK files, though you can install the ADB client wirelessly.

Rooting the NOOK Color

The operating system of the NOOK Color doesn't allow access to the device's root directories by default. To gain access, install a rooting program on a microSD card and insert it into the NOOK Color's microSD expansion slot. The program reconfigures the NOOK Color's operating system during the boot process, installing the ADB client and allowing you to access the device's root directory. Once rooted, connect the NOOK Color to your computer via a USB cord and access the root directory using the ADB function of the Android SDK from a command prompt or console window.

Installing and Uninstalling APK Files

The Android SDK uses the ADB 'install' command to move an APK file from your computer to the installation directory on your NOOK Color. To uninstall the application at a later date, use the ADB 'uninstall' command to remove the APK file from the NOOK Color's installation directory. After connecting to the device via the ADB client, enter the commands using the format of 'adb install filename.apk' or 'adb uninstall filename.apk,' without the quotation marks.

Is There an App for Android That Will Let Your Phone Give Off WiFi?

Carrier Applications

Most wireless carriers offer an application that allows for wireless tethering with the device. AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and many other major U.S. and worldwide carriers offer this option. While the application is usually free, the service itself costs upwards of $30 USD per month. Although this is the best option for most users, many advanced users choose to root their Android phone and utilize a third-party application for tethering. These applications are located in the Google Market application and are usually available for free or a minimal charge.

Rooting

Many carriers make rooting a violation of a user's contract, though some wireless providers are a little less specific. Android phones come with the interface running under a restricted user account instead of the root, or Administrator, account. This is for security and user safety because an inexperienced user can quickly destroy the phone, if he is not careful, while running as the root user. The process of rooting requires circumventing the phone's security, a process different for each phone model, and acquiring root access. Once enabled, a user is able to install dozens of applications with additional features, including wireless hot spot applications. Two applications that can be used to generate a wireless hot spot for rooted Android users.

Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether

Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether provides a lot features for phones with a 3G or 4G data connection. As long as your device is listed as supported, the application can produce a Wi-Fi connection and provide WEP wireless encryption for the access point. Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether provides a client list for booting unwanted connections from your device and allows you to choose the channel to run your wireless network on, allowing you to change your network frequency in signal heavy areas with a lot of wireless congestion. The application is free at the the time of publication.

Wireless Tether for Root Users

Wireless Tether for Root Users provides much of the same functionality as Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether and is the preferred application for many rooted Android users. Many users that have trouble with Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether find that Wireless Tether for Root Users functions on their phone instead. In addition to the features listed in previous applications, Wireless Tether provides WPA encryption, the latest wireless security standard, and allows for MAC address filtering, letting you screen devices without having to constantly monitor your phone. The application is free at the time of publication.

Warnings

Many wireless carriers consider the use of wireless tethering applications a breach of customer contracts. In addition, many wireless carriers even consider rooting your Android phone a violation of your terms of service. Check with your wireless carrier before performing the rooting process on your Android phone and again before utilizing any third-party tethering applications. Note that even if your carrier forbids wireless tethering, some still allow USB tethering, another option entirely. With USB tethering you can utilize the phone's connection as long as you can attach the device to your computer with a USB cable.

How to Find Anonymous Callers

1. Dial *69 to receive an automated message that retrieves the phone number that just called and reads it back to you. This will not work if the caller you're trying to locate has marked their number as private.

2. Call the business office of your phone service provider and ask them about their call annoyance policy. Some companies will connect you with a customer service representative who can set up calling features to track incoming calls. Other companies may direct you to contact the local authorities first. If the phone calls you receive are threatening, always contact your local authorities.

3. Ask the customer service representative to set up a call tracing feature for your phone. Call tracing utilizes the SS7 signaling network to store information about an incoming phone call. This feature will allow you to dial *57 after a phone call to access this information. This information will include the anonymous caller's phone number, the date and time of the call and the date and time that you began the call trace.

4. Find a third-party caller identification service. One such service is TrapCall, which reroutes an incoming call through a toll-free number. Calls to a toll-free number cannot be blocked. When the call reroutes back to your number after being transferred to the toll-free number, the caller ID shows in the appropriate place. You can access TrapCall by visiting www.trapcall.com. Many of these services, including TrapCall, will require a subscription fee.

4. Check out other areas of the Bandai website to find games and downloads for your cell phone, like wallpaper and ring tones.

5. Go to Bandai's Tama Town website to play games with your virtual pet. You will need your Tamagotchi's username and login password in order to access the site. The site only works with version 3 and 4 Tamagotchis, so older versions are out of luck.

6. Explore other websites of Tamagotchi owners and fans. Some of these sites also have instruction pages that don't require the Adobe Acrobat Reader, as well as other tips and tricks for playing with and caring for your new virtual friend. Tamagotchi Central and Pixelmood are 2 places you can start.

7. Borrow a copy of the instructions from another Tamagotchi owner. If none of the options above appeal to you, find someone with the same version as you who still has the instructions and make a copy of theirs.

Security Risks of Androids

Fragmentation

As of publication, there are three big versions of Android: Gingerbread (2.3), Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) and Jelly Bean (4.1 and 4.2). Together, these account for 95 percent of Android devices on the Internet. This fragmentation comes from the rapid-release cycle of Android, which some manufacturers can't keep up with, while others choose to stick with older versions of the OS for hardware reasons. Devices still using older OS, 2.3, are vulnerable to more security risks, considering that the OS hasn't been updated since September 2011.

Apps

Android comes with the built-in option to install applications from the Android Package (APK) file; this is called 'sideloading' apps. It is disabled by default. This feature allows you to add apps from outside the Google Play store, but presents the risk of installing shady files -- especially if you're sideloading pirated apps, which may include malware in the APK file. However, even apps in the Google Play store present a certain risk in the form of apps that ask for too many permissions. In 2012, the security vendor Bit9 analyzed 400,000 apps in the Play store and found that 42 percent of those apps requested access to GPS data, while 31 percent requested access for phone history.

Data Security

Phishing attempts affect Android devices just as much as PCs. Spammers send SMS or email messages with links or infected downloads that compromise the data on your Android device, or trick you into entering personal information. Some SMS malware also works by sending SMS messages in the background, giving money to the spammers by adding charges to your phone bill.

Protection

The best protection against security risks on an Android device is precaution: don't install apps from developers you don't trust, and don't install pirated apps. Review the permissions of the apps you install from the Play store, and make sure that those permissions are there for a good reason -- not just to read your data. Be wary of using any alternative app stores on your device, as they may not check their apps for security issues. Don't keep sensitive data on your device, and avoid accessing websites that need your personal information. For an extra layer of protection, add an anti-virus app to your Android device.

3. Enter the iPhone telephone number to which you want to send an SMS message. Open the SMS function on your messenger utility and enter the number on its dialpad or by using your keyboard or keypad.

Homemade Fishing Barometer

Constructing Barometer

The materials needed to construct a homemade fishing barometers are easy to find. Take a standard 1 qt. mason jar and fill it about 2/3 full with water. Then take an empty glass bottle, such as a soda or beer bottle, and place it upside down inside the water-filled jar. After a couple days, you will notice that the amount of water that accumulates inside the bottle varies. At this point your barometer is ready to gauge fishing conditions.

Reading Barometer

The water inside the glass bottle is your indicator. Depending on the pressure, the water level inside of it will rise and fall. When the bottle's water level is higher, barometric pressure is higher. Conversely, a lower water level indicates lower pressure. According to common beliefs, the best fishing times occur during higher pressure or falling pressure. So when when most of the water is in the jar, the fish are less apt to bite. Instead, you would find better conditions when there is more water inside the bottle or when the water in the bottle has just begun to recede. This falling level of water signifies falling pressure, which is usually a sign that a weather front is approaching. Typically this atmosphere will have the fish biting a bit more than normal. It is important to keep in mind, though, that using barometric pressure to judge fishing conditions will produce spotty results, as different types of fish thrive in different atmospheric conditions.

Android Sync Bookmarks

Browser

Android is an operating system developed and owned by Google. This means Android has the capability to sync bookmarks if you use Google's Chrome browser on the phone or tablet in conjunction with Google's Chrome browser on your computer. This feature was implemented in 2011 on Android smartphones and tablets, meant to allow a smoother and more uniform user experience for Google products.

Setting Up Your Browser

On your computer, open up the Chrome browser and click on the settings icon in the upper right of the window, which looks like a wrench. Click 'Options' and then 'Personal Stuff.' Look for 'Sync' at the top of the window. Insert your Google username, which is your Gmail address, and enable syncing by checking the 'Sync' box. Your Chrome browser will sync with both other computers using Chrome logged in to your Google account and your Android device equipped with Chrome.

Syncing with Android

To sync your Android device with your Chrome bookmarks, first download Chrome or ChromeMarks onto your Android device. Both can be found in the Android Marketplace. After installing, open Chrome and touch the menu key. Under General, click 'Sync with Google Chrome.' Either allow your current bookmarks to be overwritten or keep your current ones in addition to new synced bookmarks and press 'Next.' Select the Google account you wish to sync with by inserting the username and password, and then click 'Next.' Press 'Done' after confirming everything is correct to sync Chrome between your computer and Android device.

Considerations

If you have a lot of bookmarks saved in Google Chrome, syncing may take a few minutes. However, you'll have all of the same favorites on both your computer and Android device, so finding links you frequently use in your bookmarks should be easy. If ever you have trouble, Google Mobile offers support through tutorials, forums and contact forms for direct support on its website.

Fast Muscle Building Workouts for Teens

Bodyweight Workout

The bodyweight workout is ideal for busy teenagers who don't have time to go to the gym and can't afford expensive weight equipment. Using your body's own weight is a great way to build muscle fast. Start by doing four sets of 10 bodyweight squats. Stand straight up with your arms out in front of you. Squat down until your thighs are parallel to the floor, then quickly raise yourself back up. Next, do four sets of 10 push-ups. Get into a push-up position so your hands and toes support your weight. Lower your body until your chest touches the ground, then raise yourself back up. Next, do four sets of 10 lunges. Stand straight up, and lunge forward with your right leg until your thigh is parallel to the ground. Repeat with the other leg.

Lower Body Workout

Using weights will help you build muscle fast if you're a teen. Many teens only work their 'show' muscles like chest and biceps, but it's important to train your legs just as much as you train your upper body. For each exercise, use a weight that allows you to do 8 to 10 repetitions. Start with four sets of barbell squats, which work most of the muscles in your legs. Support a barbell on your rear shoulder muscles, and squat down until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Next, do four sets of deadlifts, another great all-around muscle builder. Stand with a loaded barbell in front of you, and reach down and grab the barbell with an overhand grip. Lift the weight with your legs, and drive your behind backward as you lift the weight up. Finish the lower body workout with four sets of jumping squats, which help activate different types of muscle fibers in your legs. Squat down like you would in a normal squat, but explode upward and jump on your way up. If you use any weight for this exercise, make sure it's very light.

Upper Body Workout

For each exercise in the upper body workout, use a weight that allows you to do 8 to 10 repetitions. Start with four sets of incline bench presses, which work your chest muscles. Sit on an incline bench underneath a loaded barbell. Grab the barbell, and lower the weight until it touches your chest. Then do four sets of shoulder presses, which target your shoulder and triceps muscles. Stand up and hold either a loaded barbell or a dumbbell in each hand. Raise the weight overhead to shoulder level, then press the weight up over your head. Finally, do four sets of rows, which work your back and biceps muscles. Bend over at the waist and grab a loaded barbell. Pull the weight up toward your chest, then lower the weight back down.

This is common for player's that haven't been used for a long period. If you're using a laptop, disable sleep, hibernation or standby mode, or the player won't charge. It takes about 2.5 hours for the Walkman to fully charge. Disconnect the player when you see the 'Full' message on the screen.

If you're still unable to adjust volume, download the firmware update from Sony's website. After downloading the firmware, connect your player to the computer using the USB cable; follow the guided instructions on the download to install the firmware update on your media player safely without damaging or deleting saved content.

Resetting

If you're still unable to adjust the Sony Walkman media player's volume, the hardware is is likely experiencing technical difficulty, so resetting the device is necessary. A reset is designed to solve erratic problems and abnormal operation. According to Sony, before resetting your player, shut down open media files, or you risk losing them during a reset. Using a pointed object such as a pin, press the 'Reset' button located inside the tiny hole on the back of your Sony Walkman. When you release the button, the player restarts automatically. Unsupported File Types in Droid

Android Basics

Android is an open source software platform that allows manufacturers that build smartphones and tablets based on its technology to customize the device. This creates a marketplace with many different Android smartphones, unlike other devices, such as Apple's iPhone, that are released only by Apple and have consistent features. Android has native compatibility with a variety of file types, but you must check with the manufacturer of your specific Android device to determine the file types supported by your particular smartphone.

Audio

Android devices feature native playback support for MP3, MIDI, Ogg, AAC, WAVE and 3GPP file types. If your device uses Android 3.1 or higher, it also supports FLAC playback. Native applications encode audio in the 3GPP file format, which is a worldwide standard for creating and sharing media via mobile devices, regardless of the manufacturer, service provider or mobile software being used. Files in the WMA or RM formats are likely unsupported, as they are native to Windows Media Player and RealPlayer, respectively. Check with your device's manufacturer in regard to other audio file formats.

Images

Devices using the Android operating system can natively view images in the JPEG, GIF, BMP and PNG formats. The WebP format is supported by Android 4.0 and higher. Image files can be encoded in the JPEG, PNG and WebP formats. Android devices take pictures in the JPEG format by default. Image files not in these formats, such as those with TIFF, RAW or PSD extensions, may not be supported by your Android smartphone. Images stored in the TIFF or RAW formats are typically uncompressed, lossless images, while PSD files are native to Adobe Photoshop.

Video

Android smartphones can play video files in the 3GPP and MPEG-4 file formats. Files in the WebM format can also be decoded if your device uses Android 2.3.3 or higher. Videos are taken in the 3GPP format, by default, using the native Android camera application. The 3GPP and MPEG-4 file types supported are created using the H.263 or H.264 AVC codecs. Video formats, such as ASF, MOV, WMV and RM, are likely unsupported, as they are native to specific computer programs. Files in the WMV and ASF formats run on Windows Media Player, RM files are native to RealPlayer and MOV files are used with QuickTime. Additionally, refer to your Android smartphone's documentation in regard to DivX file support.

How to Test a Battery Charger

1. Plug in your charger to an electrical outlet. Remove any batteries you may have charging in the unit.

2. Turn on your voltmeter unit. Be sure there's power getting to the meter. Plug in the test probes into the voltmeter according to the meter's instructions. Set the selector switch to the highest level for DC Volt or whatever is recommended in the meter's instructions.

3. Take a battery or battery pack that's compatible to your battery charger. Make sure the battery has no corrosion and is not leaking fluid. Touch the positive end of the battery with the red probe. Take the black test probe and place it on the negative side of the battery.

4. Check the readout on the voltmeter and see where the pointer is indicating to. If it's on the left side, or negative side, switch the test probes. If it's on the right side, it will show that the battery is receiving some charge. Where it points to on the meter will determine how much charge it received.

5. Check the battery charger to see how much power it's giving off, if you continue to receive a negative reading from the batteries. A negative reading will indicate a bad battery charger, and you should replace it. If the charger has sufficient amount of power flowing through it, it's more than likely the batteries are bad and just won't hold a charge.

Hotmail Settings for Android Phones

Background

If you want to check your Hotmail account from your Android smart phone, you must first create an account and enter your credentials to allow the mail application to communicate with Hotmail's servers. Your phone will remember these details and automatically check for new messages, if you instruct it to do so, or download new messages when you manually check your email. Without the proper settings, you cannot read, manage or reply to your Hotmail email on your Android phone.

Server Settings

When you create an email account on your phone, you must enter your full Hotmail, or Windows Live Mail, email address as well as your password. These are settings only known to you. If you choose post office protocol, or POP, as the method for accessing your Hotmail email, you must enter the POP server as 'pop3.live.com', choose security type 'SSL' and specify the server prot as '995.' If any of these settings are incorrect, you may see an alert that login has failed or that your application could not connect to the server. Note that server settings are not specific to your Android phone.

Other Settings

Your Android phone may provide you with other options or settings that are not necessarily unique to your Hotmail email. For example, you can choose what you wish to name your email account. By default, the phone may suggest 'Hotmail' but you can change this to a more descriptive name. In addition to this, your phone will ask your name and will allow you to set this email account as default, so that you automatically see it when you load your mail application or widget.

Tips

Your Android phone may attempt to automatically determine mail server settings as soon as you enter your email address and password into the field. If your phone can correctly do this, you do not need to manually enter the server address, connection type or port. When you originally set up your Hotmail account with your Android phone, it may be useful to select the 'Show password' option, if it exists. This way, you can see your password as you are typing it into the form field. This helps you be sure that you enter the password correctly the first time.
