Reasons to Use a Computer Keyboard as an Input

Speed

If you have an idea for a beat or a sound but your equipment is not set up, you may forget the idea by the time you've connected the hardware controller to the computer, set up a stand for the controller and launched the production program. By assigning the typing keyboard as the input, you can launch the program and be making music very quickly. In Apple's Logic and Garageband programs, for example, you need only click 'Window,' 'Musical Typing' to assign the computer keyboard as the MIDI controller.

No MIDI Controller

MIDI controllers can be cumbersome and unsuitable for some situations.

MIDI controllers range in size and price, from affordable desktop-sized devices, such as the Akai APK Mini, which retails for around $90, to more elaborate devices like the M Audio Axiom Pro 49, which sells for around $500. Either way, if you're new to home music production and want to demo some programs before you invest in the software, you need a method of inputting the MIDI commands. If you purchase a MIDI controller and then realize the digital music production isn't for you, you've wasted your money. Computer keyboard input devices let you try before you buy.

Damaged USB or Firewire Cable

MIDI commands are typically sent from a remote device via either USB or Firewire cables. If your cable dies in the middle of a late-night groove sequencing session, waiting till morning to get a replacement so you can continue working may kill the inspiration. Assigning the computer keyboard as a temporary input device lets you carry on making music so that you don't lose the groove.

Space

If you're heading out on tour, you may want to take your laptop out on the road so you can record any ideas as they come to you. Transporting a MIDI controller, stand and cables around is not always convenient. Using the typing keyboard keeps all of your music-making tools 'in the box' and means you have everything you need as soon as you load up your preferred music production program.
