How to Root an Android Eris
1. Navigate online to the Android Developers kit download page at developer.android.com/sdk and select the software development kit that corresponds with your operating system. For instance, if you’re working with a Windows machine, click “android-sdk_r12-windows.zip.”
2. Navigate online to the Oracle Java development kit download page at oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads, click “Java Platform (JDK) 7,” choose “Accept License Agreement” and click the download that corresponds with your operating system. For instance, if you’re working with a Windows 64-bit machine, select “jdk-7-windows-x64.exe.” Click “Run” when the file has finished downloading to install the Java SDK to your computer.
3. Navigate online to the SuperOneClick developers’ website at shortfuse.org, select “SuperONeClick,” click “XDA Page,” go down to “Attached Files” and select “SuperOneClickv1.9.5-ShortFuse.zip” to download the package to your computer. Click “Cancel” when asked whether you want to run the file.
4. Activate your Android Eris, select the “Settings” application, tap “Applications,” tap “Development” and select “USB Debugging.”
5. Connect your Android Eris to your computer with the device’s USB connector cable and click “Cancel” when you are prompted to mount your Eris. Mounting your Eris while it is in debugging mode can damage the device.
6. Launch the Android SDK on your computer and double-click the SuperOneClick ZIP file you saved to your computer to install the application.
7. Click “Root” in the top menu of the SuperOneClick application window. The program roots your Android Eris and tells you when the process is complete. Reboot your Android Eris to finalize rooting the device.
