How to Mod an Android Phone
Mods That Do Not Require Root Access
1. Open the 'Android Market' and install a different launcher--this will completely change the look and feel of your phone. Try Launcherpro, ADW Launcher or any other launcher; easily switch between them.
2. When you hit 'Home' you will be prompted to pick which launcher to use. Tap the launcher of your choice.
3. Experiment with different icons in the dock bar by clicking and dragging from the 'App Drawer' to the dock on the home screen.
4. Experiment with your home screens, add more if you wish, and change the number of rows and columns to alter the look of the user interface.
5. Download 'Desktop Visualizer' from the market to create new icons with any picture on your SD card.
Root Access Mods
6. Search the web for a rooting guide specific to your phone. While they all run Android OS, each Android phone has a different technique based on its hardware. Check Modaco, XDA Developers and The Unlockr for a guide that works for you.
7. Flash a number of custom developer firmwares until you find one to your taste. A popular choice is the 'CyanogenMod,' which as of 2011 will install Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) on most Android phones.
8. Open the 'Android Market' and install 'SetCPU' to overclock your Android phone.
9. Open the 'Android Market' and install 'Root Explorer' for access to every part of your Android's file system.
