How to Make Your Own Ancient Greek Calendar

1. Divide your paper into 12. The Greek calendar was a lunisolar one, so it had 12 months.

2. Name the months Hekatombion, Metageitnion, Boedromion, Pyanepsion, Maimakterion, Poseidon, Gamelion, Anthesterion, Elaphebolion, Munychion, Thargelion, and Skirophorion, if desiringyou want to create an Athenian calendar, one of the most popular at the time. Other city states had different names for the same calendar.

3. Begin the calendar with Hekatombion, as it is the beginning of the year -- however, this month falls at the beginning of summer. Order the rest of the calendar according to this.

4. Alternate the 29 to 30 days between each month -- this finishes the festival portion of the calendar. Add in the second, or political calendar by creating 10 faint divisions in the calendar, each one becoming a prytanie.

5. Add extra days in to the calendar or remove some -- often Hellenic rulers would add in days to the calendar to allow for extra time in the year or preparation for festivals.
