How to Handle the Boss Trying to Date You

Dealing With the Boss

1. Educate yourself on workplace romances in your organization. Before you can figure out how you should handle your boss, you need to educate yourself on any policies in your employee handbook or company guidelines related to fraternizing in the workplace. Try to determine if it is accepted or frowned upon.

2. If fraternizing is not frowned upon in your working environment, determine if you want to date your boss. If you are entertaining this idea, proceed with caution. According to CNN Money, an online business resource, if you and the boss have a bad breakup, the tension between the two of you could infect the rest of the workplace.

3. Tell your boss that you do not feel comfortable dating at the office. If you have no interest in dating your boss, you can let him down easy by just explaining that you do not partake in workplace romances. This kind of response should be accepted because employees often have rules about dating someone they work for.

4. Do not use the crush to your advantage. You should never try gain benefit as a result of a boss having a crush on you. Refrain from asking for special favors or treatment, and do not falsely lead your boss on to get ahead in the workplace.

5. If your boss continues to try to date you, after you have explained that you do not date anyone you work for, you need to sternly tell your boss that you are not interested. Your job description does not include unwanted advances and flirting, so if the behavior continues, you need to refer back to your employee handbook to read the organization's written sexual harassment policy. If you are unable to find anything in the employee handbook or company guidelines, visit your human resources department to either disclose the problem you are having with your boss or to seek more information concerning sexual harassment in the workplace.
