How to Sort Shortcuts on an Android

Sorting Home Screen Shortcuts

1. Navigate to the location on the Home screen where you want to add your first shortcut. Swipe your finger left or right on the screen to find the section, or 'extension,' where you want to start.

2. Press the 'Menu' button on your Android device. This button's icon varies across different devices; it may simply say 'menu,' or it may have an icon of several horizontal lines or four squares.

3. Tap 'Add,' then 'Shortcuts.' From here you can select from a list that includes apps, bookmarks, contacts and settings. You may have additional shortcuts available depending on the apps you've installed.

4. Move the shortcut around the screen to whatever location you prefer. Press and hold your finger on the shortcut until your Android device vibrates and the shortcut appears to 'lift' off of the home screen. You can now drag it around the screen wherever you want. Remove your finger from the screen when you find the location you prefer.

5. Continue adding and organizing your shortcuts on the Home screen until they're set up the way you want.

Sorting Shortcuts into Folders

6. Navigate to the location on the Home screen where you want to add a folder. Swipe your finger left or right on the screen to find the location you want to start.

7. Press the 'Menu' button on your Android device. This button's icon varies across different devices; it may simply say 'menu,' or it may have an icon of several horizontal lines or four squares.

8. Tap 'Add,' then 'Folders.' Tap the folder type you want. Most likely you'll want to use the 'New folder' option, though you may decide another pre-set option is better for you, like 'Facebook Phonebook' or Pandora's 'My Stations.' If you choose one of the pre-set folders, the folder will appear with its default contents and you'll have little or no further customization options available.

9. Press the 'Menu' button again and tap 'Add,' then 'Shortcuts.' From here, you can select from a list that includes apps, bookmarks, contacts and settings. You may have additional shortcuts available depending on the apps you've installed. The shortcut will appear on your Home screen.

10. Press and hold your finger on that app until your device vibrates; then drag it to the folder you created and remove your finger. The app will move inside the folder.

11. Continue adding shortcuts to the folder until it contains all the items you want.

12. Rename the folder as approproiate. Tap the folder to open it and press and hold your finger on the name of the folder near the top of the display. In a moment, a text box will appear, and you can type in whatever folder name you want. Then tap 'OK.'
