Hotmail Settings for Android Phones

Background

If you want to check your Hotmail account from your Android smart phone, you must first create an account and enter your credentials to allow the mail application to communicate with Hotmail's servers. Your phone will remember these details and automatically check for new messages, if you instruct it to do so, or download new messages when you manually check your email. Without the proper settings, you cannot read, manage or reply to your Hotmail email on your Android phone.

Server Settings

When you create an email account on your phone, you must enter your full Hotmail, or Windows Live Mail, email address as well as your password. These are settings only known to you. If you choose post office protocol, or POP, as the method for accessing your Hotmail email, you must enter the POP server as 'pop3.live.com', choose security type 'SSL' and specify the server prot as '995.' If any of these settings are incorrect, you may see an alert that login has failed or that your application could not connect to the server. Note that server settings are not specific to your Android phone.

Other Settings

Your Android phone may provide you with other options or settings that are not necessarily unique to your Hotmail email. For example, you can choose what you wish to name your email account. By default, the phone may suggest 'Hotmail' but you can change this to a more descriptive name. In addition to this, your phone will ask your name and will allow you to set this email account as default, so that you automatically see it when you load your mail application or widget.

Tips

Your Android phone may attempt to automatically determine mail server settings as soon as you enter your email address and password into the field. If your phone can correctly do this, you do not need to manually enter the server address, connection type or port. When you originally set up your Hotmail account with your Android phone, it may be useful to select the 'Show password' option, if it exists. This way, you can see your password as you are typing it into the form field. This helps you be sure that you enter the password correctly the first time.
