I Can't Adjust My Sony Walkman's Volume
Volume Limit
Sony Walkman MP3 players come with an Automatic Volume Limiter System feature that allows you to set restrictions on volume adjustments. According to Sony, the feature is designed to allow music and videos to sound at a reasonable and comfortable volume level that won't distort sound output. When enabled, this feature is only applied when you're using headphones. It's not supported by the built-in speaker. If you're unable to adjust your Sony Walkman media player's volume, select “Settings” from the home screen to bring up your player's settings. From there, select “Common Settings” and select “AVLS.' Selecting the “Off” option disables the volume limit automatically. Once disabled, pressing the volume up or volume down buttons increases or decreases volume.
Charging
According to Sony, Sony Walkman media players experience sound problems if the device's battery is low. These problems are especially common if you're using the built-in speaker. If a 'Low Battery' warning message appears on your player's screen, connect the player to the computer using the USB cable. It might take up to five minutes for the player to begin charging. This is common for player's that haven't been used for a long period. If you're using a laptop, disable sleep, hibernation or standby mode, or the player won't charge. It takes about 2.5 hours for the Walkman to fully charge. Disconnect the player when you see the 'Full' message on the screen.
Updating Firmware
Updating your Sony Walkman media player's firmware installs the latest features and components that improve your device's performance. If you're still unable to adjust volume, download the firmware update from Sony's website. After downloading the firmware, connect your player to the computer using the USB cable; follow the guided instructions on the download to install the firmware update on your media player safely without damaging or deleting saved content.
Resetting
If you're still unable to adjust the Sony Walkman media player's volume, the hardware is is likely experiencing technical difficulty, so resetting the device is necessary. A reset is designed to solve erratic problems and abnormal operation. According to Sony, before resetting your player, shut down open media files, or you risk losing them during a reset. Using a pointed object such as a pin, press the 'Reset' button located inside the tiny hole on the back of your Sony Walkman. When you release the button, the player restarts automatically. If you're still unable to adjust the volume, contact Sony for additional troubleshooting and possible repairs because the player's hardware is likely faulty.
