How to Install Swype on a G1

1. Access Swype's official Web page (see Resources). Click the 'Register' button at the bottom of the page. On the following page, enter an email address that is accessible from the phone (most likely your Gmail account). Enter a password in the space provided and click the check box next to 'I Agree to the Terms and Conditions.' Click the 'Submit' button at the bottom of the page. Swype will send a link to download Swype.

2. Open the email that was sent from Swype to the G1. Tap the first link that appears in the email. The setup file will begin to download automatically. Wait several minutes for the file to download completely. Click the downloaded 'Swype-Installer.apk' file to begin the installation process.

3. Press 'Install' to start installing Swype on the G1. Once this part of the process has finished, press 'Open' to open the application. Follow the instructions as listed on the screen to update and register Swype for the specific user. Select which version of Swype you wish to use and select 'Download Swype.'

4. Wait a few minutes for that particular version of Swype to download. Select 'Install' to finally install Swype on the G1. Once the screen displays the 'Application Installed' screen, select 'Done' to close the installer screen.

5. Press 'Enable Swype' to open the G1's 'Language and Keyboard Settings' page. Click the check box next to 'Swype' to enable Swype as a valid input method for the G1. On the 'Attention' pop-up screen, select 'OK' to approve the selection. Press 'Back' to return to the Swype screen. Click 'Select Swype' to open the 'Select Input Method' pop-up. Choose 'Swype' to allow Swype to be the primary input for text on the G1 touchscreen.
