How Can I Stop the Sleep of Death on Android?

Software Solutions

1. Power up and unlock your mobile device. Press the “Home” button and then the “Menu” button.

2. Enter the “Settings” menus via your device's touchscreen or navigator wheel.

3. Select “About Phone” from the settings menu, and then select “System Updates.” This will seek out, download and install any system updates for the Android operating system. In some cases, installing the most recent software upgrade may fix the “Sleep of Death.”

4. Visit the device manufacturer's website or use the pre-installed app to download and install any hardware-specific updates. For instance, access the Toshiba Service Station app or Motorola's Android Software Upgrade News page to download recent software fixes.

Hardware Solutions

5. Reboot your Android mobile device or tablet. In some cases, this is the only surefire way to get around the “Sleep of Death.”

6. Turn your Android device off, and remove the device's battery cover, exposing the battery. In some cases, unsecured batteries move out of place, causing the device to lose power and shut down. To prevent the issue from occurring again, you may need to cushion the area around the device's battery, keeping it from moving out of place.

7. Cut a piece of paper to size and fold it over a few times, making it as flat as possible. Cut the folder paper again if necessary; make it in close as size to the battery as you can.

8. Place the folded piece of paper over the exposed battery and replace the battery cover. Gently shake the unit a bit, paying close attention to the battery compartment. If you can't hear or feel the battery moving, the fix should work. If the battery is still insecure, increase the thickness of the paper cushioning by folding it over again until it holds the battery in place. Turn your Android device back on. Avoid jostling and shaking the device to prevent the “Sleep of Death.”

Replacement

9. Visit the retailer from which you purchased your Android device.

10. Supply the retailer with a proof of purchase and any warranty documents you received upon purchase of the Android device.

11. Explain the issue to the in-store staff and request a replacement. Depending on the device and the status of your warranty, you will receive a new battery or new mobile device. You may be required to pay a small restocking fee, depending on the retailer.

12. Contact the manufacturer if your Android device is covered under a manufacturer's warranty. Have your warranty registration number ready, if it's available. In some cases, the manufacturer will repair or replace defective non-warrantied devices, such as those affected by the “Sleep of Death,” for a fee.
