How to Change the Kernel on an Android

1. Download a kernel zip file. These kernels can be found on third-party developer sites such as XDA-Developers. Popular free kernels include 'netarchy-toastmod,' 'KiNgxKernel,' 'SBC.' Kernels can vary in features and compatibility, but when starting off, look for a kernel that allows you to control your phone's power consumption or clock speed.

2. Connect your phone to a computer with the USB cable.

3. Place the phone into 'Disk Mode' and transfer the downloaded zip file onto its SD card.

4. Power off your phone. Simultaneously hold down the 'Volume Down' and 'Power' buttons to boot the phone to HBOOT mode. Now, you will see a text menu with several onscreen prompts.

5. Press the volume rocker and scroll to 'RECOVERY.' Click the trackpad button to enter recovery mode. A second menu will be displayed on screen.

6. Click 'Install zip from sdcard.' Afterwards, press 'Choose zip from sdcard.' Here, your SD card's internal contents will be displayed, including the kernel package that you copied earlier.

7. Highlight and select this file. You'll be prompted to confirm that you want to install the kernel file.

8. Approve the kernel installation. This will bring up an onscreen installation progress bar - once this bar disappears, your kernel will be fully installed.
